Session two of Leadership Natchitoches Cohort 6 was packed with valuable insights and exciting local discoveries for our participants! ????????? Day one kicked off with a visit to Oakland Plantation, where Park Ranger Barbara Justice discussed the cultural history of the plantation and its connection to the current day community. It provided a great chance to ask questions and more deeply understand how the past shapes the present-day spirit of Natchitoches Parish. On day two, we dove into a discussion with Rebecca Blankenbaker, Director of the Cane River National Heritage Area (CRNHA), exploring the ins and outs of tourism in our area—from hotel occupancy rates and taxes to events and programs that make Natchitoches a must-visit destination. Then, we heard from an all-star tourism panel that shared valuable perspectives on how tourism is shaping our community's economy: -Crit Williams & Jason Summerlin from Dark Woods Adventure Park -Jill Leo representing the Natchitoches Main Street Program -Payne Williams owner of the Rusca House Bed and Breakfast & Samuel Guy House Bed and Breakfast. -Jay Sharplin, President of Sharpco Hotels Group -Paige Alost, Director of the Natchitoches Tourism (CVB) We explored downtown Natchitoches through a historical tour led by Logan Schlatre, Grants Program Manager at CRNHA, followed by a stop at the Train Depot museum. We ended the day with an exciting sneak peek of Dark Woods’ brand-new putt-putt course. Mardy Summerlin, Jason Summerlin, and Crit Williams gave us the inside scoop on how their vision transformed into a successful adventure park business that’s adding to our area’s growing tourism scene. ????????? Today we attended the Ribbon Cutting Celebration and Informational for the new Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Program at Bossier Parish Community College in Natchitoches. ????????? This 6-week program will prepare students for employment as professional commercial drivers and follows all Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Entry-Level Driver Training rules, regulations, and guidelines. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to test for one of the following licenses: -CDL Class A-Tractor-Trailer -CDL Class B-Straight-Truck ?????????
