A touching post from our Survivor Outreach Coordinator Austin Audo. ??
Survivors Engagement Coordinator for Gold Star Gamers | Advocate for Military Veterans, Active Duty Personnel, and Families of Fallen Soldiers | Surviving Gold Star Son of Army Maj. David Audo
When I was young, my father owned the original PlayStation, and we’d spend countless hours immersed in racing games like Need for Speed and Gran Turismo. Though our chances to play together were rare, those moments became cherished memories. It was our way of bonding—sharing a love for fast cars and the thrill of the race—until my father passed away in 2009. Occasionally, I find myself revisiting those games, especially the "time trials" mode, where the goal is to race against your best time. After each attempt, the game generates a "ghost car"—a digital version of your car that mirrors your previous performance. Beating your best time results in the ghost car being replaced with a faster version of your own. For me, though, the ghost car I raced against wasn’t my own—it was my father’s. I raced his ghost car as if we were still side by side, always careful not to beat his fastest lap. It’s my way of preserving his record, keeping a piece of him alive in that digital world, and continuing to race against him again and again. At Gold Star Gamers, we come together not just as players but as survivors who share similar journeys and experiences of grief and healing. Each of us brings a story, a memory, and a piece of our hearts into the gaming world. Here, we find a rare kind of understanding—one rooted in shared experiences and empathy. In this community, we aren’t defined by our losses but by the strength we’ve gained from them and the courage it takes to keep moving forward. Whether it’s through the shared excitement of a game, a laugh over a hard-fought victory, or a quiet moment of reflection, Gold Star Gamers offers a space where we can simply be ourselves. There’s no need to explain our grief or feel the pressure to “move on.” We are surrounded by people who understand what it’s like to carry the weight of loss while still finding joy in life. Together, we draw strength not only from our healing but from the resilience of those around us. This community is a sanctuary—a place to create new memories with people who truly understand. It’s a space where the healing power of gaming meets the importance of holding on to what matters most. By sharing our experiences, we lift each other, offering support that extends far beyond the virtual world. Whether we’re celebrating victories or finding solace in knowing we’re not alone, Gold Star Gamers reminds us that hope and connection thrive here. I am incredibly grateful to Gold Star Gamers for the opportunity to be part of their exceptional mission, both as a military surviving son and as the GSG Survivors Engagement Coordinator. It’s an honor to give back to my extended family of survivors and contribute to a cause that means so much to all of us. Thank you to my amazing team and our founder, Martha Laughman, for building such an incredible organization. I'm excited for all that we will achieve together in the future. #GoldStarGamers #GoldStar #Military #Veteran #Survivors

Every time work gets a little hard, I think about why I joined Gold Star Gamers. Last year, at the 2023 Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl, I witnessed a moment that changed me forever. It was after the game—the @Notre Dame Fighting Irish had just claimed victory over the Oregon State Beavers. Gold Star Gamers and their families were on the field, soaking in the incredible experience. A group of four young gamers, all surviving military children, approached a Notre Dame player to share their stories. What happened next was nothing short of extraordinary. As these kids explained that they were Gold Star children, the player paused. He revealed that he came from a military family himself, and in that moment, their shared connection hit him hard. He was overcome with emotion, tears streaming down his face as he thanked them for their sacrifices. And then, this towering football player—a symbol of strength and resilience—wrapped all four kids in a giant hug. He didn’t just hug them; he held them, with tears falling freely, thanking them over and over for their strength and for honoring their fallen heroes. That moment wasn’t just about football or gaming. It was about connection, healing, and remembering why we do what we do at Gold Star Gamers: to bring hope and honor to the children of those who gave everything. It’s moments like these that remind me why this work matters. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it. ?? To the Notre Dame player: thank you for showing these kids what gratitude and empathy look like. ?? To our Gold Star families: you are the heart of everything we do. #GoldStarGamers #TonyTheTigerSunBowl #MilitaryFamilies #SaluteToService #NeverForgotten #HopeAndHealing
