an extremely late and long but grateful post for the past and coming year with our fiscally sponsored project,?merkado kultura. in 2023, we shared a?Lu Frances Malvar's?pop-up in one of our event roundups that i ended up stopping by, and in typical fashion a quick chat turned into a multi-hour yap, where i talked up?merkado kultura, a resource i had found and fallen in love with—and as it turns out, france was one of the co-organizers. which led me to my first burning question: you live here—why have you never done a merkado in san diego? she explained to me why and she also offhandedly mentioned that her dream had always been to do a market in the?Mingei International Museum?(be careful what you say....they might just happen...iykyk) i had walked away mostly with a determination to do whatever we could as gg to support and bring mk to san diego—we started with mini-merkado in december 2023 at boodle fight’s family dinner, and a few more mini-mk’s in the summer, culminating in october with the fourth merkado kultura—the first-ever in san diego. it couldn’t have been done without france’s trust, faith and sheer ability to make things happen, her cofounders Mel Nava and Bianca T., Genaro James Gutierrez III of (@boodlefightsd), literally the first person i knew who could help make this a reality, as well as the volunteers and vendors that brought this market to life. and im so thrilled to say that we’re helping bring merkado back and potentially more cities this year. but if you’re curious to learn more, come visit?merkado kultura’s lunar new year pop-up at?joon shoppe in north park?on 02/08 with some familiar faces! more coming soon ?? ??:?@shotbylexie?@lexiewithlove

THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY, We are so grateful to everyone who came together this Saturday to dedicate their time and energy to assemble care packages for the firefighters who traveled to support LAFD. Your generosity and spirit truly made a difference. Together, we were able to assemble over 100 care packages, filled with the supplies they requested. It’s moments like these that remind us of the power of community. Thank you for making this event a success and for supporting our heroes on the front lines. We’re committed to showing up and finding sustainable ways to continue this work alongside our community partners. Last week at this time, I was standing in a skilled nursing facility in NE Pasadena. That facility, along with so many other homes and businesses throughout much of the area that I called home for many years, is gone today. Thank you to those who have reached out, asking about my family, who is still all in LA County. We were both incredibly lucky and not so lucky when it came to the fires that are still devastating the area, but we are all safe and that's what matters. Pasadena is where I grew up, and LA is where my heart is as well. Sending love and support to all of my friends who remain there, and for those who are looking to help, here are some immediate options: United Way of Greater LA: https://unitedwayla.org/ (partners with United Way Ventura as well, to support long term recovery efforts for affected communities) CA Fire Foundation: https://lnkd.in/g4GY278U (helps firefighters, their families, and wildfire victims) LA Fire Department Foundation: https://supportlafd.org/ (helps equip firefighters with emergency supplies) LA Regional Food Bank: https://lnkd.in/gwXtD2er (monetary and food donations to help support wildfire victims) Please also take a look at Jerry Won's post from today and see what organizations could use further help. If you've got other resources, please add in the comments - I know there are many lists out there, and the more options we have, the larger our reach.

I hosted my first community event! ???? Here's what I learned: 1. You can never over-communicate enough. You can absolutely put trust in your vendors, but do not be afraid to be extremely specific with not only what you are looking for, but also what you're NOT looking for. Remember: no one can read your mind. 2. Anchor yourself in your mission. Planning an event has so many moving parts. It's easy to get lost in the sauce of coordinating, planning, and the tiny details. Don't forget to zoom out, align yourself and your team with the big picture mission. I created an "event manifesto" that really helped me stay grounded throughout the whole process. 3. You don't get what you don't ask for. If you're hosting an event to raise money, tell them! Make it obvious, make it easy. If you're hoping to gain followers to your Instagram account, tell them! Create incentives for people to take that action. - PS: I'm on a mission to change the way Filipino-Americans look at themselves. If this mission aligns with you, let's please connect ?? I've also launched the first round of fundraising $50K for my short documentary: "Kamayan: We Eat With Our Hands." You can learn more & donate here: https://lnkd.in/eCeW_WV3 - A Sundoc Studios community event Special Thanks to Matthew Meredith, Jamuelle Zumel, Genica Bienne Bunggay, Sabrina Baranda, & many others! Launch yourself into the latest batch of new windows of opportunity for your career or your work! One heads-up, don't miss out on the grant opportunities section this time. We've got some good ones (in particular in the Massachusetts area) so if you or someone you know could potentially win a grant that helps further your work!

we're back! sorry to miss you all last week but we've been busy getting things rolling for our annual Golden Gift Guide (www.aapigiftguide.com). if you know of someone or an aanhpi-owned business who should be in it, tell them to apply! now back to this edition. we found some really interesting jobs across the country and across the spectrum but want to highlight the grant funding section. if you have any artist friends in nyc, share the health emergencies grant with them. it's a great program that could help someone out of a jam from unforeseen medical expenses. thanks for reading/sharing!
