School shootings must stop. The root causes need to be addressed and fundamental change must come so they don’t happen in the first place. But until that happens, we need a backup plan: Active Shooter Drills and emergency protocol training for teachers, staff, and students must be expanded to include simple and proven first aid treatment for gun-shot wounds. In the aftermath of a school shooting, victims of traumatic injuries need immediate intervention for the best odds of survival. But when first responders are separated by lockdowns, protocols, and procedures, help may not come soon enough. However, with recent breakthroughs in trauma medicine, teachers, staff, and students can take action immediately to help slow blood loss and seal chest wounds if they have a little training and the right supplies. Developed for the military, the MFAK – or Multi-Individual First Aid Kit – contains easy-to-use supplies designed specifically to treat multiple victims with gunshot wounds from military-grade rifles – similar to those used in far too many school shootings. The MFAK is credited with saving the lives of countless soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines by helping them survive what’s known as the ‘golden hour.’ At Golden Hour Rescue, our goal is to equip every classroom in the United States with MFAKs and to give teachers, staff, and students a fighting chance to survive traumatic injuries.
