Keeping Healthcare Human
关于我们
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation champions humanism in healthcare, which we define as clinically excellent care that is kind, safe, and trustworthy. Founded in 1988 by Dr. Arnold P. Gold and Dr. Sandra Gold, the Gold Foundation is a nonprofit focused on empowering experts, learners, and leaders to together create humanistic systems and cultures. Our most well-known program is the White Coat Ceremony, an iconic ritual that welcomes future clinicians into healthcare and places the oath to compassionate patient care at the beginning of training. More than 50,000 medical and nursing students participate in a Gold-supported White Coat Ceremony each year. The Gold Foundation is also home to the Gold Humanism Honor Society, a group of nearly 50,000 physicians and medical students who are leaders in kind, safe, trustworthy care. We offer many resources to support humanism, including the Tell Me More? communications tool and the Medallia Gold Humanism Trust Tool. We also host the Gold Humanism Summit, a national conference that will next be held in Baltimore, Sept. 17-20, 2025. Two councils are key partners: the Gold Corporate Council, made up of leading healthcare companies, and the Gold Partners Council, made up of leading medical schools, hospitals, and health systems. Kind, safe, trustworthy care benefits patients and clinicians alike. We invite you to learn more at www.gold-foundation.org and join us in our mission to keep healthcare human.

Thrilled to facilitate a conversation with Chris Brainard and Michael Lentz about what it means to put the person at the center of care. When asked about how you create a culture that emphasizes kind, safe, trustworthy care, in short, humanistic - Chris shared that it’s a life-long journey- but by using the Medallia system, they were able to realize 10 years of the journey in only 2. That comprehensive system is one of the reasons The Arnold P. Gold Foundation knew we had the right partner to co-create the Medallia Gold Humanism Trust Tool. Good partners and resources make the difference- Lee Becker, Amber Maraccini, Shawn Swanson, MBA, and Kevin White lead and represent Medallia on the collaboration and the Gold Corporate Council, joining Gold leaders, including President and CEO Kathleen Reeves, MD, FAAP, and Judith Friedland, Brianne Alcala, and Pia Pyne Miller. Partners also include former Gold and Medallia colleagues, Richard I Levin MD, FACP, FACC, FAHA, Ann Bruder, Toni Land, MBA, BSN, CPXP, LCC, Hastie S., and Meike E. who collaborated with us to build out the research behind the Medallia Gold Humanism Trust Tool.
“We’re worried about patients, they’re worried about members—but they’re the same people.”— Chris Brainard, University of Alabama at Birmingham Moderated by Elizabeth Cleek, Psy.D. (The Arnold P. Gold Foundation), the #MedalliaExperience “Trust Factor” panel brought together Chris and Michael Lentz (Independence Blue Cross) for an honest and insightful conversation on building trust across the healthcare journey. Some highlights that stuck with me: ??? Humanizing healthcare requires both heart and mind. As Chris said, “Each patient’s clinical and personal needs are unique—even as an individual, you have multiple personas.” The challenge is understanding who is in front of us, and what they need in that moment. ??? Trust is a shared responsibility. Mike described Independence as the “first leg of the stool,” emphasizing the critical role of payer-provider partnerships in delivering seamless, whole-person care. ??? Empathy is not just aspirational—it’s measurable. By leveraging Medallia’s conversational data, Mike’s team proactively identified disruptions (like new claims processing and ID cards) and addressed them before they escalated. ??? One behavior can change everything. Chris shared a powerful stat from the Medallia + The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Trust Tool: when providers patiently address questions, experience scores improve 34x, and patients are 23x more likely to feel included in their care. It’s a data-driven reminder that trust drives everything—from outcomes to loyalty. The future of healthcare lies in our ability to bridge clinical excellence with genuine human connection—leaders like Chris and Mike make that future feels a little closer. #HumanExperience #Trust #OwnIt #PatientExperience #MemberExperience #HumanizeHealthcare #MedalliaHealthcare

My first conversation with Kathleen Reeves, MD, FAAP about this summit was amazing. I can't wait to be in person with her in September and dive deeper into some of the ideas we talked about a few weeks ago. Thanks to The Arnold P. This week is Match Week, when graduating medical students find out if they have "matched" into a residency program and where they are going for the next several years. It's an exciting time, and we are celebrating with so many of you. Congratulations! Thank you for taking this long road to care for patients with humanism. Thank you for seeing the person in front of you. Thank you for your kind, safe, trustworthy care. To those who did not match, we see you, too. Medicine still needs you, your humanism, your care. Humanistic doctors travel all kinds of paths.??? #matchday?#matchweek #humanismalways

Keeping the human connection in healthcare might sound impossible to do in today's challenging business climate. But the truth is that kind, safe, trustworthy care also saves money. Humanistic care is the best care. And it is a good business practice, too. Thanks to Practicing Excellence and Stephen Beeson, MD for having Gold President and CEO Kathleen Reeves, MD, FAAP on the podcast. Listen to This Clinical Life on YouTube or any podcast platform.
“Part of the changing of culture is us as individual care team members to say, I’m going to make a commitment to connect with patients, and we have full dominion over that micro-interaction and who we are.” Listen to this recent episode of This Clinical Life hosted by Stephen Beeson, MD as he and Kathleen Reeves, MD, FAAP discuss the impact of human connection in healthcare. ?? Congratulations to the inaugural class of Gold Humanism Honor Society members at Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine! (And it was great fun to spot a mention of Dr. Arnold P. Gold rounding with Dean Jeffrey R. Boscamp years ago, plus a quote from President and CEO Kathleen Reeves, MD, FAAP in this latest newsletter. Thank you for sharing, Miriam Hoffman!)
Things have been exciting and busy at the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine this semester. Learn about some of the highlights in the HMSOM Campus Quarterly. Check it out to hear about our inaugural The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Gold Humanism Honor Society Induction ceremony, important work on the ethics of AI by Charles E. Binkley, MD, FACS, HEC-C, and a transformative gift from Carin Ehrenberg and Roger Ehrenberg to grow the Human Dimension Program.
