? HighView Session Recap: Resumes & Cover Letters ? Last week, HighView mentees had the incredible opportunity to participate in mentor meetings and panel discussions hosted by talent folks and hiring managers at our partner companies. The topic? Resumes & Cover Letters – the gateway to making that crucial first impression in the application process. Here are some key takeaways from the sessions that had both mentees and mentors reflecting deeply: ?? AI is a tool, not a shortcut Mentees were surprised (and relieved!) to learn that it’s okay to use AI to refine resumes and cover letters – as long as the final product reflects their own voice and accurately portrays their unique accomplishments. ?? Courage + Authenticity = Growth Navigating new professional environments can be intimidating. It takes real courage and vulnerability to show up as your authentic self, ask questions, and proactively seek out allies and supporters. Those small steps make all the difference. ?? Connections are currency You never know when a networking connection will pay off. Our students were reminded to build relationships wherever they go and remain open to unexpected opportunities. ?? Social skills win every time Even hiring managers in technical roles said that while it's important for a candidate to demonstrate proficiency in a certain skillset or programming language, they place equal (if not more!) emphasis on the candidate's ability to communicate well and be a collaborative teammate. ?? Learning is lifelong Both mentors and mentees had “aha” moments throughout the sessions, proving that job search skills like resume writing and interviewing are areas where we can all continue to grow, no matter where we are in our careers. A huge THANK YOU to our mentors and partner company volunteers for providing such valuable insights and creating safe spaces for these important conversations. By equipping our students with these lifelong skills, you’re helping to shape confident, capable leaders who are ready to thrive in their professional journeys. ?? ?? Alumni Panel Time! ?? Last night, we hosted our students' favorite session of the year, where over 75 of our high schoolers and their parents heard from 5 HighView Alumni (live from their dorm rooms!) about their experiences in college. Key Advice from our Panelists: ?? Ask for help! Self-advocacy and having the courage to reach out to professors or financial aid directors enabled our college students to navigate difficult situations. ?? Join clubs and student groups These Alumni have joined multi-cultural sororities, First-Gen student groups and more. This has allowed them to build community and receive peer support. ?? All of HighView's networking training is being put into practice Whether it's making new friends in their classes or making a good impression on professors & rush chairs, all 5 panelists stressed the importance of getting out of your comfort zone and engaging in HighView's sessions to the fullest. ?? Start early with college & scholarship applications! Despite our prodding, many of them waited until the last minute ?? They urged all high school students to get ahead of the game to minimize stress. Our students had so many thoughtful questions (including how to manage stress, how to save for personal expenses, how to approach internships, can you switch majors, should you do study abroad) that we ran out of time. Huge thank you to Fernanda Andrade, jamila salih, Nahom Leake, Isabella Pena and Lucia Marquez for sharing your wisdom and vulnerability with the younger generation! Since you were just in their shoes and are now excelling in college, you have inspired the high schoolers profoundly. ?? HighView Community: If you have any connections in Marketing, Software Engineering, Medicine, Accounting or Film/Music - these 5 college rockstars are ready to crush it in your summer internships. Over the past two weeks, all 11 HighView cohorts met with their mentors and engaged in important exercises involving conflict resolution. Mentors shared their own experiences and modeled specific workplace scenarios in which conflicts were addressed in a collaborative manner. Students then practiced resolving conflicts that arose at school, at work, and in their personal lives. Key learnings included leading with empathy, approaching a situation with the lens of trying to understand the other person's perspective/priorities, and being vulnerable. We discussed the importance of bringing potential solutions/compromises instead of simply expressing your dissatisfaction with the current situation. HighView continues to level up our social capital curriculum, ensuring that our students are prepared to thrive in college and in top workplaces. We now have a wait list of over 30 qualified students/referrals who are eager to join the program, indicating the impact we're having on their friends and the value they see in HighView for their futures. Last week, all HighView students convened for their first Professional Development session of the year led by HighView Associate Board Member Alex Pepin. Covering “Your Strengths & Working Style,” Alex shared her perspective on how she has harnessed her unique personal strengths in the workplace while learning how to incorporate varying strengths & working styles of her colleagues. After reflecting on their strengths, students were placed in 10 different groups (deliberately with folks from other schools!) where they got to know new peers, learn their respective styles, and work together to come up with a specific initiative from one of two simulation prompts. Following this exercise, two representatives from each team presented to the entire group of 80+ students on what they learned from the exercise and how they might be able to polish their strengths even further in school or work. Some key takeaways from Alex’s session: ?? Everyone has unique strengths that contribute to the success of a team. ?? Understanding and applying these strengths in collaboration fosters innovation and problem-solving. ?? Diversity of thought enhances group performance. ?? Knowing / leveraging your strengths = better ability to contribute meaningfully to group work ?? Assigning roles based on strengths can optimize performance Great work to all of our brave presenters and thank you to our workshop leader Alex Pepin! Shout-out to Guild for hosting this session in your amazing office ???? #professionaldevelopment #careerdevelopment #leadership #softskills

HighView's student base has grown so much this year that we are now hosting 11 different cohorts on multiple days. ?? Yesterday we welcomed our mentors at new partner companies Adobe and Johnson Financial Group, LLC, along with expanded cohorts at Guild and Salesforce. ?? We also hosted a student welcome session, where we outlined our (very high!) expectations in the program and heard from keynote speaker Deidra Smith from the Colorado Technology Association about her unique college & career journey. Our 2024-25 school year is in full swing -- stay tuned for several exciting updates as we continue to change the game for first-gen talent in Denver. #firstgeneration #mentorship #collegeaccess #careerdevelopment #talentpipeline #opportunitygap #networkgap

And we're off!! The 2024-25 HighView school year is off to a strong start. With our largest student cohort yet, we now have 100+ top high school students regularly immersed in Denver's top corporate workplaces, building connections and confidence to become the next generation of leaders. Students were able to meet/reconnect with their mentors and were blown away by touring downtown office buildings that they've always seen from afar but never been inside. Even on Day 1, we're already instilling the importance of networking for career opportunities at a young age. They got to learn what makes company cultures special (by crossing the bridge at DaVita Kidney Care!) and hear from leaders at IMA Financial Group, Inc. about intentionally investing in people and relationships -- "it's not who you know, it's how well you know them." Thank you to our partners Guild, Accenture, Salesforce, IMA Financial Group, Inc., Amazon and DaVita Kidney Care for an excellent kickoff session and welcome to our newest mentors!
