??Do you have real estate in your trust?? If you have transferred ownership of that property into your trust, you need to contact your insurance company and name your trust as additional insured. Making sure that your insurance policy is updated to reflect this is absolutely imperative. If your house were to burn down while you are alive and it’s in a revocable trust, oftentimes, the insurance company will make the proceeds out to you. If the house hasn’t been listed as an additional insured and burns down after you have passed away, the insurance company will pay the proceeds to your estate. When that happens, a probate claim gets opened and now everything must go through the courts. ?? Watch my video about how and why to take care of this as soon as possible. ?? Does your estate plan need some updating? As we enter the new year, it’s a great time to think about a fresh start and getting things organized.? One of our favorite organization tools is a checklist. ?? Below is our beginning of the year estate planning checklist - you’re welcome! ?? Review Beneficiary Designations - look at the beneficiaries listed on your retirement accounts & life insurance policies.? ?? Update Health Care Proxy & Power of Attorney - important documents especially if you were to become incapacitated.? ?? Fund Your Revocable Trust - Make sure all relevant assets are properly titled in the name of the trust includes re-titling real estate, non-business bank accounts, non-retirement brokerage accounts, & other assets to avoid probate ensuring a smooth transition to your beneficiaries. ?? Consider Life Changes - such as getting married, having a new child or grandchild, or losing a loved one, may necessitate changes to your estate plan. ?? Protect New Assets - If you’ve purchased a new home, sold a business, or received an inheritance this year, ensure these assets are included in your estate plan to avoid probate & potential complications for your beneficiaries. ?? Consider Long-Term Care Planning - always a good time to explore options for protecting your assets in case you need nursing home care in the future.? ?? Review Insurance Coverage - Review your auto & homeowners policies to ensure you have the proper coverage & that the coverage limits are adequate. ??
