Last week, GP was proud to attend the The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Women’s Leadership Summit at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. Our own senior associate Elizabeth Schneider, AIA, CWA, moderated and participated in the session Chicago Women in Architecture: Recognizing the Women Who Built Chicago. This discussion focused on the Chicago Women in Architecture (CWA)’s current campaign to place buildings designed by women on the National Register of Historic Places. Joining Elizabeth on the panel were Amy Hathaway, Elizabeth A. Blasius, and Erica Ruggiero, Assoc. AIA. Together, they shared stories, benefits and challenges of the designation process as part of a larger historic movement. The Women’s Leadership Summit, founded by AIA, unites the largest network of women in the industry who are breaking down barriers and paving the way for future generations. The event is dedicated to empowering women to step into leadership roles in architecture, design and related fields.

GP attended the public reception this week for “Welcome to Tribuneville: An Imaginary Vision of an Old Chicago That Could Have Been” by architectural cartoonist Klaus, co-presented by MAS Context and 150 Media Stream. The exhibition at 150 North Riverside is a hand-drawn animation, installed on 150 Media Stream’s giant media wall—a 150 ft x 22 ft series of LED screens—which features 60 of the most inventive building designs entered in the famed 1922 Chicago Tribune Tower architectural competition, as well as flying machines, elevated walkways, monorail tramways, and other fantastical details dreamed up by the artist. The exhibition will run through the end of the year, with public viewing hours Monday to Friday from 11am–2pm and Saturdays from 1pm–10pm.

Last Friday, the Facades+ conference, sponsored by The Architect's Newspaper, took place in Chicago at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel. Our own Travis Soberg, AIA, LEED AP, GP’s principal and director of sustainable design, served as the host for the event, built around the theme of Sustainable and High-Performance Enclosures. Travis provided an introduction to the full day of events and moderated several discussions. GP’s Scott Brackney, AIA, also participated, delivering the presentation “From Skyline to Streetscape: Understanding Materiality in High-Rise Buildings.” He showcased three GP projects that closely blend aesthetic expression, performance, and cost-efficiency, demonstrating the power of innovative facade design. Thank you to everyone who joined for a day of inspiration and collaboration!

GP’s Astor Park was recently recognized as Best New Office Project in the 2024 Building Columbus Awards! Sponsored by Columbus Business First, the award program recognizes projects that exemplify the spirit and betterment of the community while overcoming increasing challenges of high interest rates, persistent inflation and tight labor markets. Developed by The Pizzuti Companies and Haslam Sports Group, the unique saw-toothed fa?ade design of the office building complements the angular geometries of the adjacent Lower.com Field, home to Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew. The office building is the first building within the mixed-use development to be completed, with interior build-out continuing through next year. Congratulations to the entire project team!

Congratulations to the team behind 320 South Canal, which was awarded the 2024 ULI Chicago Vision Award last night! Developed by Riverside Investment & Development Company with Convexity Properties - a DRW Company, designed by GP, and built by Clark Construction Group, the 2.2-acre site also features The Green at 320, one of the largest privately owned public parks in Chicago. The 1.5-acre park space was designed by GP in collaboration with landscape architect Confluence. At the heart of The Green at 320 is a 10,000-square-foot oval-shaped lawn designed to foster community gatherings and host a variety of events. From live music and movies in the park to fitness classes and a farmers’ market, arts and cultural performances, this park is a hub of community activity. Surrounding the central lawn are intimate seating alcoves and an amphitheater, enhancing the site's usability and aesthetic appeal. This park is not just a green space; it's a vibrant, active urban hub from May through October and can be creatively adapted in winter months with features like an ice-skating rink. ? The Green at 320 South Canal is a testament to visionary urban planning and creative problem-solving. It revitalizes a previously underutilized area and establishes a new paradigm for how urban spaces can serve both office workers and the surrounding community. Through its innovative design, active programming, and strategic partnerships, The Green is not just a development, but a vibrant, sustainable neighborhood crafted for the future. ? The ULI Chicago Vision Awards define the standard for real estate development in the Chicagoland area. The Vision Awards recognize the full development process—construction, economic viability, marketing, and management, as well as design—and promote best practices in development, identifying projects and programs that exemplify the policy and practice areas that underpin ULI.

GP’s China Resources Qianhai Center and Conrad Shenzhen have won the 2024 International Architecture Award! China Resources Qianhai Center covers 6.18 hectares and includes five towers totaling nearly 472,000 square meters. The overall development totals more than 500,000 square meters and includes three office towers, a five-star hotel tower, an apartment tower, and a terraced retail complex. GP designed all of the towers and co-developed the master plan with UK-based design firm Benoy, who also designed the retail complex. In an effort to prioritize a vibrant pedestrian community at the heart of the complex, the original eight-parcel site was combined into two larger blocks, which unified the development and minimized vehicular traffic within the site. As part of the Hilton family of hotels, the new Conrad Shenzhen is a luxury 300-key property that features cascading amenity floors and landscaped roof gardens along its western side, oriented to provide views of the adjacent green belt and Qianhai Bay. With the parcel bordering the expressway on the south end, the Conrad tower and signage are prominent and visible from a great distance in the surrounding context. The fa?ade design recalls the textures and undulating movement of traditional woven products of the region. A material palette of high-end, warm-toned materials provides a sense of understated luxury, with touches of traditional Chinese patterns and refined detail throughout. The award is sponsored by the The Chicago Athenaeum Museum for Architecture and Design together with the European Center for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies. A distinguished jury of international designers selected over 150 new buildings from 48 countries. The International Architecture Awards are noted as the “highest and most prestigious distinguished building awards program that honor new and cutting-edge design.”

GP is featured prominently in Dezeen’s list of recently completed skyscrapers in Chicago, with 4 of the 9 towers designed by the firm, including 320 South Canal, One Chicago, Bank of America Tower (110 North Wacker) and 150 North Riverside. ? Completed in 2022, 320 South Canal is Chicago’s healthiest office tower, a 51-story building located directly south of Chicago Union Station. The majority of the site—approximately 1.5 acres—is set aside as a public park. The building’s folded fa?ade creates an ever-changing texture that reinforces the verticality of the building. At street level, east and west fa?ades express V-shaped structural transfers, which open up the ground floor. In this way, the park becomes an integral part of the building, and the building serves as an extension of the park. ? One Chicago, also completed in 2022, is located on a full-block site in Chicago’s River North area. Designed in partnership between GP and Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture, the project totals approximately 2,200,000 square feet and includes 812 residential units, 55,000 square feet of office space, parking, and 188,000 square feet of retail, featuring a flagship Whole Foods Market, a premier Life Time fitness and wellness center, a restaurant, and a large roof garden on top of the podium. ? Completed in 2020, Bank of America Tower is a state-of-the-art Class A office tower that totals 56 stories and 1,770,000 square feet. Interior space planning is enhanced by the five-foot setbacks along the river, providing the equivalent of 14 corner offices. To satisfy the city’s requirements, the design provides a 45-foot-wide riverwalk that is covered, but effectively open to the sky, 55 feet above. Three large, tree-like structural elements spaced 90 feet apart transfer out the tower columns along the river and further open the site. ? 150 North Riverside, completed in 2017, is located prominently at the confluence of the three branches of the Chicago River and less than one block away from one of Chicago's busiest commuter train stations. The 54-story office tower has a height-to-base ration of 20:1. The design utilized a unique core-supported structure with a very small footprint at grade and allows the majority of the two-acre site—more than 75%—to be a landscaped public park with pedestrian pathways overlooking the river. ?
