The Bildungskooperation Deutsch (BKD) of the Goethe-Institut USA organized an essay competition inviting high school and college students to reflect on the relevance of Immanuel Kant's 'Sapere Aude' in today’s world. The winners impressed by connecting this Enlightenment ideal to modern contexts, such as social media and competitive sports. Yesterday, at an award ceremony held at the Embassy of Germany in Washington, D.C.. Ambassador Andreas Michaelis presented the winners with their prizes. Also celebrating and congratulating the winners was the team of the Goethe-Institut with Susanne Rinner, Program Director of SPARK at the Goethe-Institut Washington and Sebastian V?tter, Director of Language Programs North America, who remarked: "I was deeply impressed by the response and the high intellectual quality of the entries. It is gratifying that Kant continues to have such a strong appeal today, especially among young people." This inspiring event underscored how shared values like democracy and the pursuit of truth continue to strengthen the German-American partnership. The winners of the two first prizes (for high school and college essay) won a trip to Germany to attend a language course. The winners are: No?l Da (The Johns Hopkins University), first place college essay Olivia Dogan (Stuyvesant High School NYC), first place high school essay Jonas Broening-Chai (Dwight School) Margaret Pollak (National Cathedral School (NCS)) Madelyn Merriam University of North Alabama Aidan Nanquil (Fordham University) READ THE WINNING ESSAYS: https://lnkd.in/e5j93sfV McDaniel College, American Association of Teachers of German - AATG William Layher. #kant300 #goetheinstitut #learngerman #teachgerman #gegenuber #gegenüber #germanamericanfriendship #immanuelkant #essaycontest
Today is #WorldPhilosophyDay. Are you familiar with the concept "Sapere aude"? ?? The idea, which translates to "dare to know" in Latin, comes from 18th-century German philosopher Immanuel Kant. The concept encourages people to think for themselves without relying on others to tell them what to believe. Kant saw this as the essence of the Enlightenment, a period when people began questioning authority and seeking knowledge through reason.? The Goethe-Institut Washington held an essay competition asking high school and college students to explore the concept of Sapere aude today. Participants were encouraged to delve critically into Kant's ideas with a fresh perspective, applying them to modern problems. On Wednesday, the Embassy held an award ceremony and reception for the winners of the competition. Their winning essays examine Kant's call of Sapere aude in entirely new contexts, from social media to competitive sports. Ambassador Michaelis presented the winners their prizes, which included scholarships for Goethe-Institut language courses. Sapere aude is a timeless concept, as relevant today as it was in the 1700s. As high schooler Olivia?Dogan wrote in her essay, "This is how I can navigate the complexities of today’s information-rich environment while staying true to myself." This essay contest demonstrates how deeply ingrained this principle is in both the United States and Germany. Our shared values, like democracy and the pursuit of truth, form the foundation of our strong partnership. ???????? Read the winning essays here: https://lnkd.in/e5j93sfV

After the end of World War II, European nations promoted European unification as a “peace project”. What remained largely ignored was the obligation resulting from the colonial past of countries like Germany, France, and Great Britain. What kind of solidarity can be expected from the descendants of the colonizers –?and those who were colonized? Last week, our Executive Director Ajkuna Hoppe and Sebastian V?tter, Director Language Programs North America at the Goethe-Institut Washington, attended the inauguration of the new Joachim Herz Stiftung Non-Profit Learning Center near Atlanta, Georgia. This nearly 5,000 sq ft facility is set to become a vibrant hub for transatlantic exchange in the Southeast and beyond, offering a space for conferences, workshops, and meetings in support of the transatlantic community. Read about the new center here ?? https://lnkd.in/e5hMxRHR For high school students participating in German American Partnership Program (GAPP) exchanges, particularly those from underserved communities in the US, the Joachim Herz Stiftung offers life-transforming scholarships that enable access to international travel and global education. Notably, 65% of GAPP schools are located in rural areas, and a significant number of scholarship recipients are first-generation students—the first in their families to travel abroad for educational purposes. Heartfelt thanks to the Joachim Herz Stiftung team for creating a welcoming space, bringing together transatlantic enthusiasts from the U.S. and Germany.?We greatly appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with long-time partners and meet new ones??
