New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles: Letze Woche habe ich drei Goethe-Institute in den USA besucht. Anlass war die Er?ffnung der neuen R?ume in San Francisco. Gleichzeitig entstand ein Bild der USA kurz vor den Pr?sidentschaftswahlen. Reiseeindrücke: ??New York - If you can make it there you make it anywhere: Vom Goethe-Institut New York aus steuern wir wichtige USA-weite Programme wie z.B. unsere digitalen Deutschkurse. Ich bin froh, dass sich diese so gut entwickeln: Sogar in Alaska und Hawaii lernen jetzt Menschen beim Goethe-Institut. ??Strukturkosten einsparen zugunsten von Kultur- und Sprachprogrammen: Das Goethe-Institut New York hat moderne R?umlichkeiten mit Schaufenster zur Stra?e. Aber auch hier reduzieren wir die Bürofl?che. So werden Kosten gespart, ohne Sichtbarkeit im transatlantischen Kulturdialog zu verlieren. Dasselbe sechs Flugstunden weiter, beim neuen Goethe-Institut San Francisco:?Kleiner (und preiswerter), aber fein, offen und zug?nglich. Von Ausstellungen über Workshops bis hin zu Deutschprüfungen: Hier ist alles m?glich. ??Die Er?ffnung in San Francisco war ein sehr gro?er Erfolg. Mit dem neuen Institut befinden wir uns in der N?he wichtiger Kulturorte im Zentrum. Ein guter Impuls für die Belebung der Innenstadt nach der Covid-Leere und eine gute Basis für den internationalen Kulturaustausch. ??Ein Schwerpunkt des Goethe-Institut San Francisco ist die Schnittstelle von Technologie und Kunst. Das Ergebnis: innovative Kunstwerke und kontroverse Debatten um Ethik und KI in direkter N?he zum Silicon Valley.? ??In Los Angeles besuchte ich das Goethe-Institut in Downtown, das sich in einem vielf?ltigen Viertel mit lateinamerikanischer und asiatischer Bev?lkerung intensiv vernetzt hat. Eine Plattform sowohl für die?Community vor Ort als auch für den deutsch-amerikanischen Dialog: ein zukunftsorientiertes Konzept mit lokalen und globalen Komponenten. ??überall habe ich mit Menschen über die Wahlen gesprochen. Wir trafen eine Vertreterin der Stadt San Francisco auf dem Weg nach Nevada, die dort in der Wahlkampf-Endphase für die Demokraten Klinken putzt. In Los Angeles erz?hlte uns ein Partner, er w?hle die grüne Partei, weil beide gro?en Parteien sein Vertrauen verloren h?tten. Manche meinen, dass die Checks and Balances die Demokratie auch bei einem Sieg Trumps sichern werden; andere fürchten ein totalit?res Regime. Manche glauben, dass der Wahlausgang keinen Einfluss auf Kultur und Bildung haben wird, andere fürchten eine Absenkung der F?rderung. In einem sind sich alle einig: In den Umfragen liegen beide Kandidaten so eng beieinander, dass es unm?glich ist, den Ausgang der Wahl vorauszusagen. ??Last but not least: An allen Goethe-Instituten habe ich zugewandte Partner und hoch engagierte Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeiter getroffen. Ihnen allen danke ich von ganzem Herzen.?Enge transatlantische Beziehungen sind ein starkes Fundament in unruhigen Zeiten. Die Goethe-Institute leisten dazu einen wichtigen Beitrag!?
