The work of Franz Kafka is characterized by feelings of absurdity, futility, and existential fear, which gave rise to the term 'Kafkaesque.' In this upcoming screening co-presented with the Nightingale Cinema and Chicago Filmmakers, there are few direct references to Kafka works, but there is a pervasive atmosphere of anxiety, disorientation, and political inefficacy. Animals act with human-like qualities, narrators lose themselves in unending monologues, and the tools of filmmaking itself become haunting, humorous protagonists. ? Join us on December 6th at Chicago Filmmakers for an evening of surreal, dark, and funny short films by Dana Sherwood, Deborah Stratman, Rita Pauls and Federico Luis, Gernot Wieland, Mahdi Fleifel, and Fran?ois Bucher. We promise it will be weird! Tickets: https://lnkd.in/guz43urR

It is a strange picture that Germany is presenting these days. Although workers are needed everywhere and the acceptance of refugees on the labor market is a success story, “irregular migration” seems to be the most controversial topic. People in areas whose populations have been shrinking for years are particularly afraid of migration. How can these contradictions be explained? Germany is de facto only until very recent a country of immigration and obviously attitudes are not really keeping pace with reality. The “crisis” is not so much one of migration as one of mentality. German journalist and author Mark Terkessidis?will be in conversation with?Xóchitl Bada, Professor in the Department of Latin American and Latino Studies at the University of Illinois Chicago on Thursday, October 24 at 6PM at the Goethe-Institut Chicago.
