God's Love We Deliver

In celebration of our birthday month - God’s Love was founded on May 1st, 1985 - we collaborated with Tony Award Winner Bonnie Milligan, along with Broadway stars Arielle Jacobs, Bradley Gibson, and Zachary Noah Piser to create “Delivering Love,” our latest music video! Our parody of “Seasons of Love” from the legendary musical RENT calls back to the AIDS crisis in New York City, when God’s Love was founded to feed those who were homebound with AIDS. Having grown to cook and home-deliver more than 4 million meals annually, we address over 200 individual diagnoses with our medically tailored meals. Our core commitments have remained at the heart of who we are: delivering meals to everyone who need us, never having a waitlist, and delivering meals the next delivery day. Just a few months ago, we announced that we expanded our reach for people living with sickle cell disease, which is a group of disorders including sickle cell anemia. These genetic conditions cause blood cells to be misshapen and are most prevalent among Black and Latino populations. To mark Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and highlight the importance of this program expansion, we wanted to share our client Fatoumata’s story. ? Fatoumata is a young woman from Guinea, West Africa, and a mother to three young girls—Oumou (age 9), Zeinab (age 8), and Fatoumata (age 5). All of the girls have sickle cell disease, and Fatoumata carries the trait. Fatoumata’s two sons tragically died of complications from the disease, and she said that in Conakry, the capital of Guinea where they lived, she was frightened her girls were vulnerable to the same fate.? ? “Sickle cell disease is like a death sentence where we are from,” Fatoumata said. “Everyone thought the girls were going to die, like their brothers. I vowed to do everything I could to save my girls.” ? Fatoumata, who has a Masters degree in Communications and worked at a marketing agency in Conakry, decided to make the brave step of moving to New York eight months ago in search of better medical care for her girls. She said she loves the city and is so pleased with the care her girls are receiving at a local hospital clinic. They are all receiving meals from God’s Love We Deliver. ? Since starting our meal program, all three girls have put on necessary weight and feel stronger. They just started the year in public school and start the day in a healthy way with breakfasts from God’s Love. Spent yesterday morning at God's Love We Deliver with some of the Visa Commercial Solutions New York crew. This organization holds a special place in my heart, so it was a privilege to lend a hand in their prep kitchen with my colleagues. With the help of volunteers, GLWD is able to deliver 17,000 medically-tailored meals each weekday – a testament to their tremendous impact in NYC.

An article today in Gothamist highlights the New York State 1115 Waiver, a pilot program that will use Medicaid funding to deliver nutritious meals, such as the medically tailored meals God's Love provides, across New York State. The NYS 1115 Waiver will open the door for God’s Love We Deliver and all community-based organizations in the 14 regions where the State is proposing to adopt the Waiver. The 1115 Waiver enables community-based organizations (CBOs), such as God’s Love We Deliver, to join a social care network (SCN). CBOs are responsible for delivering high-quality, evidence-based, and accessible social care services. The network will be administered by a lead entity that will coordinate the delivery of social care services by CBOs to Medicaid members with shared data & technology between the SCN, CBOs, NYS, and other stakeholders, to help evaluate the impact on health outcomes. We at God's Love are excited for the NYS 1115 rollout over the coming months and the new opportunities it will give to support those living with illness in our home state! https://lnkd.in/eKSCQquB

This month, we had the opportunity to welcome back over 60 volunteers from fuboTV Network for a day of community service! ?? Their dedicated team spent the day rolling up their sleeves in both our kitchen and bakery, preparing over 10,000 medically tailored meals for our clients living with severe and chronic illness. ? On National Be an Angel Day, our longest serving volunteer is on the national news! Nearly 30 years ago, our volunteer Tat joined a field trip to God’s Love We Deliver to prepare meals for our clients, and has been with us ever since. Today, Tat has given more than 34,200 hours of volunteer service, more than any volunteer in our history. Our volunteer network is comprised of tens of thousands of dedicated individuals and Tat sets a unique example for us all.
