    I just attended C2 in Montréal. Here is what is trending at the most creative event in the industry. C2 is?not?your usual event.? This event has always wanted to be different. It clearly states that business meetings don’t have to be boring and that we can be creative while being?effective. The destination is part of the?game Tourisme Montréal is heavily involved with the show. They understand its importance to propel creativity and business. They made Grand Quai, a pier for cruise ships, available and stopped the incoming traffic for the event. This destination loves events. Mixing business with creativity This mixture of business and creativity should be the new normal for events.?Too much business turns into a spam fest we want to avoid. Too much creativity and?you won’t be able to justify it to the boss. Leave experiences to the creatives It was evident how creators and artists took control. From activations like sensorial walks, neurodivergent lasagna making, and tapestry sessions to more traditional sessions with a spin. Titles such as How to be Cool, Are You You? Stimulate interest and creativity. Belonging through meetings Braindates were heavily present at C2. They are one-to-one meetings or short group impromptu discussions that fuel a sense of belonging. No event program will match our super-specific interests. The content becomes a connector rather than the protagonist. Microevents? The team read the brief. They embraced microevents, running ‘conferences’. These are 1:30hrs blocks of content with 10/15 minute sessions on a vertical topic. The content is hyper-relevant. These blocks allow you to get all the content you need without feeling FOMO. You are free to wander around and explore other sides of the event. Engagement Every session and activation is an engagement feast. I participated (and won - fair and square) in a games how on AI and sustainability. Exhibitors had lounges instead of booths. Food trucks with a shared seating area made lunch social. I was shocked to see an incredible number of eventprofs on the show floor, despite another industry event in the same week. I am 100% going back to C2. It’s a breath of fresh air. Where will I be next? Tag your guess in the comments.

    I have been seeing this trend for a few years now. For smaller shows, it's a ton of work to spin up an event app, especially with limited resources. This solutions is perfect for exclusive, or smaller, internal events. (SKOs / Galas / Award Ceremonies, Presidents Club etc) My agency has been using a single QR Codes on the back of our badges and allows attendees to receive all of the information on a single branded scan - Instead of multiple QR codes in different locations, going to different places.     Are some events dropping event apps for good? I am noticing this trend more and more. I was at an event last month with 200 attendees. I noticed how it did not have an app. It provided critical info with QR codes on the back of the badge. Wait up. Before I get threatening comments from some event tech CEOs, I believe in apps. I wrote The Event App Bible, for heaven's sake. I remember the time when almost every event had its app, no matter the size. After posting about this topic in my newsletter, a very popular eventtech provider reached out, confirming how very few are activating apps in ‘all in one’ platforms below a certain meeting size. So, what is happening with apps? My take: unkept promises. Especially on networking. Which should be the top reason to use apps at smaller events. Very few apps allow for acceptable discovery of potential new connections at events. Yes, they are getting better, yes, AI, but people! Apps have been around for almost 20 years. The most significant use case remains to check the schedule and know what's next, some level of messaging that, in most cases, turns into spam—that is not enough. One app had a twist, and it was a backchannel that people wanted to use. It had an outstanding UX, and eventprofs loved it. It was Attendify. RIP. There will always be a use case for apps. Especially for large events where chaos and overwhelm are inherent. Companies like Eventbase are well-positioned on that front and doing well financially. The others? Either they innovate, or they will be wiped out very quickly. Should you be concerned with apps if you run an event with less than 1K attendees? Probably not. What’s your take? Do you still use apps?
