Changing Times for Women Entrepreneurs: Is the Funding Gap Closing? ?? Why is it a great time to be a woman in business? Despite historical challenges, many women entrepreneurs claim that the situation is improving. ?? In 2022, only 2.1% of venture capital in the US was directed towards companies solely founded by women. However, the rising number of women starting their businesses suggests this trend is changing. For instance 2020, women accounted for 47% of new business owners, a significant increase from 29% in 2019. ?? Nonetheless, the issue of funding remains relevant. Despite growing interest in women entrepreneurs, many still face biases. Olivia Cotes-James, the founder of the startup Luüna, emphasizes that during popular investment pitches, additional questions arise that are not posed to their male counterparts. ?? According to a Biz2Credit report, in 2022 the funding rate for women-owned companies rose to 41%, higher than that for male-owned businesses. However, the average funding amount for women was only $55,898 compared to $93,976 for men, indicating that further improvements are needed. ?? Women entrepreneurs still encounter stereotypes suggesting they are less ambitious. Even in equal circumstances, a UBS study found that investors are more likely to support male leaders. Olivia Cotes-James shares her experience that the personal opinions of investors sometimes outweigh data, indicating a correlation between biased perceptions and facts. ?? Nevertheless, many women find the strength to move forward. For example, Victoria Zorin, founder of Nola Technologies, discovered that experience and mentorship support significantly aided her business development. She also advises young entrepreneurs to have a broader view of opportunities and not solely rely on a single opinion. ?? Ultimately, despite the challenges, the current environment is favorable for women in business. The key is to follow one's passion and understand customer needs.
