We are inviting you to join our chapter of the National Black Nurses Association (NBNA). NBNA membership is open to all nurses who possess an active Registered Nurse (RN) or vocational/practical (LVN/LPN) license and current nursing students at all levels. On Tuesday, March 11th, 2025, the New York State chapters of the National Black Nurses Association held their inaugural Advocacy Day in Albany, New York. This initiative was made possible through the dedicated efforts of Dr. Caroline Austin-Mattison, DNP, RN, FNP-BC, chair of the Health Policy Committee of the Greater New York City - Black Nurses Association, who spearheaded this effort under the guidance and support of Dr. C. Alicia Georges The Advocacy Day provided a vital platform for nurses to advocate for legislative priorities that support underrepresented communities disproportionately impacted by Social Determinants of Health (SDoH). In particular, we focused on issues such as access to quality healthcare, education, Black Maternal Health, gun violence, affordable housing, among others which play a crucial role in shaping health outcomes in marginalized populations. During this event, we had the invaluable opportunity to engage directly with New York State legislators and Assembly members. We shared firsthand accounts of how SDoH affect the communities we serve, including their constituents, and emphasized the urgent need for policies that address these disparities. Our discussions highlighted the importance of equitable healthcare access and the necessity for legislative action to ensure that all communities, particularly those historically underrepresented, receive the support they need. The day was marked by meaningful conversations and a shared commitment to advocate for change. By voicing our concerns and highlighting the real-world implications of SDoH, we aimed to foster a deeper understanding among lawmakers of the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. This event not only strengthened our collective advocacy efforts but also reinforced the critical role that nurses play in shaping health policy and promoting health equity. Together, we are determined to continue this important work, pushing for policies that uplift and empower the communities we serve.

Director for the Center for Innovation in Education Excellence at the National League for Nursing | DEI Consultant | Experienced Nurse Educator and Simulationist
Yesterday, we hosted another impactful Nurse LEAD session, Building Future Leaders: Professionalism & Leadership for Success. Our team once again did an outstanding job covering essential topics such as professional etiquette, attire, grooming, responsible social media use, and communication skills. As part of this session, we also assembled self-care and hygiene bags for each student to support their personal and professional growth. I am incredibly grateful to our Greater New York City - Black Nurses Association members for their generous contributions, which made it possible to provide these essential supplies. Your support continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of these future nursing leaders! Johnson & Johnson grant. #NurseLEAD #Professionalism #Mentorship #GNYCBNA
