Gnarly Tree Sustainability Institute

The #GnarlyTree team had great discussions with Caribbean Regenerative Community Development and other project partners in Puerto Rico over the last couple of weeks! We are pleased to be working on several projects supporting the implementation of sustainable agriculture and forestry practices. While there, we had productive conversations about marketing and outreach, project success metrics, and carbon offsets. We also had an opportunity to visit some farms to see the results of our projects and taste some amazing Puerto Rican coffee and chocolate.

Congratulations to our #GnarlyTree research associates Sita Primadevi and Bria Burke and friends from the U.S. Fulbright Program who graduated from the O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs master's program this past weekend. We enjoyed hosting guests for brunch at #GnarlyTree lodge and participating in the hooding ceremony at IU Auditorium on Thursday.

#GnarlyTree managing principal Stephanie Hayes Richards [she/her/hers] represented our USDA Partnerships for Climate-Smart Commodities team from Smart Ag Puerto Rico last week at the World Specialty Coffee Expo in Chicago. It was a fantastic event during which we gained a better understanding of sustainable coffee programs in other countries, the Specialty Coffee Association standard, and communicating product value. We look forward to using all we learned last week to help coffee and cacao farmers in Puerto Rico design a locally-led voluntary sustainable agriculture program, implement climate-smart agricultural practices, document and communicate project benefits, and expand markets for Puerto Rican products in the global marketplace. https://lnkd.in/gvm2u8WY

The #GnarlyTree team had a great time last week at the Kelley Institute for Environmental & Social Sustainability Focused Fields Workshop on "Sustainable Consumption in a Finite World." It was a wonderful gathering of IU faculty, staff, and alumni committed to addressing complex global sustainability challenges. We are so glad #GnarlyTree Principal Associate Kenneth Richards had an opportunity to share work our team collaborated on with R Street Institute on "Greening the Invisible Hand." Thanks to everyone who joined us for the service event at Amy Weingartner Branigin Peninsula Preserve sponsored by #GnarlyTree and Sycamore Land Trust on Friday! Volunteers helped remove Autumn Olive, Privet, and Asian Bush Honeysuckle from the property. Thanks to Mary Welz for all her hard work leading this event! We had a great time and enjoyed helping SLT!

Thanks to O'Neill Environmental Professional Students Association (OEPSA) at Indiana University for hosting a lovely dinner last week with an inspirational key note address by Cardell Johnson. The #GnarlyTree team was so glad to be part of the festivities and celebrate all the great work your group has done this year. And we feel very honored that #GnarlyTree was selected as Employer Partner of the Year and GTSI research associate Amelia Magyar was recognized as your Member of the Year. We look forward to partnering with OESPA for many years to come!

Grateful to have had such a fantastic team working on this project, including #GnarlyTree team members Emily Giovanni, Kenneth Richards, Jane Koh, PhD, Dr. Izlawanie Muhammad, Sita Primadevi, Adam Copp and our partners at Skrine and Environmental Defense Fund.
