Glow Up Africa

Glow Up Africa is a non-profit organization that raises awareness for Hepatitis B prevalence in West Africa. We also partner with schools across West Africa to rebuild their educational infrastructures, thereby equipping and empowering students with the basic skills needed to advance in a global environment. Overview of Hepatitis B The prevalence of the Hepatitis B virus continues to plague African countries. While Hepatitis B is considered extinct in western countries like the United States, African countries fall short of this luxury as they race to find cure to a virus that has affected close to 75 million people in the continent, ranging from 13.6% of the population in Nigeria to 11% in Senegal and 5.7% in Ethiopia to name a few. The main concern about the extensive reach of Hepatitis B is not the fact that it is spreading across the continent, but the need to develop a comprehensive strategy that will eradicate the virus. Education Initiative While traveling across West Africa and speaking to local secondary schools about Hepatitis, we noticed the lack of a stable educational infrastructure in these schools. This inspired us to create an Education Initiative, which involves the building of libraries. Our preliminary initiative involved building boreholes to aid water supply. However, through extensive research, there appeared to be a need for systems that would contribute to the intellectual and academic growth of the students. Goal and Objectives for Hepatitis: Our goal for stopping, curing and preventing the spread of Hepatitis B, is to partner with the government and international organizations to create a comprehensive strategy that will eradicate the virus as part of the WHO’s Viral Hepatitis Strategy and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This includes effective distribution of vaccines in areas susceptible to the virus and making treatment affordable for infected individuals.
