GMGI is focused on helping to catalyze the local economy by bringing science to Gloucester in a meaningful way.

关于我们

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) was launched in 2013 in the belief that the ocean represents a new source of opportunity. As a not-for-profit whose ambitious mission is to "address critical challenges facing our oceans, human health and the environment through innovative scientific research and education,” GMGI is demonstrating that there is vast potential in marine science discovery powered by genomics. Gloucester, a 400-year-old port, offers the ideal location and maritime infrastructure for situating the world’s first dedicated marine genomics research institute. The proximity of Cape Ann to the biotechnology hub of Cambridge and Boston allows for easy northward expansion of this economic driver.

Last week, the Academy's Cohort 1 took a break from the lab and headed to the woods for some fresh air. Joined by their mentors and Academy teachers, the group visited Project Adventure, Inc. and attended a team-building workshop at Beverly's Moraine Farm. The day was filled with rope swings, games, tightrope walking, and - most importantly - teamwork. The workshop prioritized building trustworthy relationships and communication among the class. Students can utilize these skills during the rest of their time in the program and as they enter the professional workforce.

  • “DNA EXTRACTION! WOOHOO!” – Madeleine Harlan, Teaching Instructor The Class of 2025 | cohort 1 has begun their DNA extraction protocol and the excitement is REAL. After two weeks learning the basics of laboratory weighing and measuring, the students plunged into their first experiment, isolating DNA from a whitefish sample. They used standard laboratory equipment and methods to eliminate cell membranes, proteins, and other cellular components. The DNA sample that they isolate will be used as the starting point for experiments in identifying the species of fish, starting next week with polymerase chain reaction.

?? ? Antibiotic Resistance: when strains of bacteria change to resist antibiotics that previously were effective in treating them. GMGI Researchers on the Microbial Discovery team – Kevin Penn, Ph.D., Zach Dench, and Sam Major – have partnered with Mass General Brigham/Harvard Medical School’s Michael Gilmore, Ph.D. to tackle this growing issue, trying to understand the spread and evolution of antibiotic resistance. In his research at Harvard, Dr. Gilmore has focused on ????????????????????????, a specific type of bacteria that can cause UTIs, meningitis, intra-abdominal, bloodstream and wound infections – infections that are difficult to treat because of antibiotic resistance. Harmless types of these bacteria also occur in the healthy microbiome in the guts of humans and animals. Recently, GMGI’s genomic techniques and incredible access to local waters have provided Dr. Gilmore with the unique opportunity to understand where ???????????????????????? bacteria naturally occur, including their existence in marine animals. Collecting crabs, as seen above, is just the first step. GMGI researchers will check for ???????????????????????? in these animals, and if found, they will dive into culturing and genome sequencing. Their aim? To analyze any antibiotic resistance genes discovered. If successful, this work could lead to a grant proposal to further explore these important issues.

This summer, members of the GMGI Research team participated in a collaborative internship project with Cell Signaling Technology (CST). Dan Curran, an incoming freshman at Providence College,?was selected to participate in CST’s?summer internship program. Together with Elizabeth Russell (CST), Dr. Andrea Bodnar (GMGI), and Dr. Riss Kell (GMGI), Dan worked on a project titled “Tools to study the DNA damage response in a cancer-resistant animal model.” The researchers tested the cross-reactivity of CST antibodies to sea urchin proteins. The results of this project will provide a valuable new toolkit for researchers who use sea urchins as a model to understand gene function and regulation, in turn furthering the impact urchins can have on the research community. Thank you to CST for the opportunity to collaborate and for their shared commitment to young career scientists!
