The design of the Foil Ferry demonstrator is well underway and we’re excited to share a sneak preview of our progress so far. A precursor to the full-scale 150-passenger hydrofoil ferry, the demonstrator is a functioning prototype designed to prove the viability of the technology—from dynamic stability and flight controls to the patented collision absorption system and all-electric propulsion system. Together with Kitsap Transit, our team is homing in on the ferry’s attributes, including a modern exterior befitting the innovative technologies behind the design. We have also established a site for the shoreside infrastructure at the Bremerton terminal which the ferry will use to charge. We expect to put this zero-emission, high-speed demonstrator to the test on Puget Sound in 2026. BIEKER BOATS LLC #FoilFerry #hydrofoilingferry #zeroemissions The Kitsap Transit Electric Fast Foil Ferry Demonstrator and Shorecharging Design Project is supported with funding from Washington’s Climate Commitment Act. The CCA supports Washington’s climate action efforts by putting cap-and-invest dollars to work reducing climate pollution, creating jobs, and improving public health. Major progress has been made on the Port of Portland’s new dredge tender at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. A replacement for the W.L. Williams, this sturdy, Glosten-designed workboat is equipped for towing and pushing pipeline strings and barges through Portland’s waterways. In February, the deckhouse and pilothouse were united with the hull, and the shipyard is currently outfitting the vessel with bulwarks, push knees, piping, and equipment foundations. Our engineers have been making visits to the shipyard for inspections and providing engineering checks, and will continue to support the project until the tender enters service later this year. #shipyard #vesseldesign #constructionsupport

The repower effort for the M/V Kennicott began a few years ago when Alaska Marine Highway System (AMHS) reached out to Glosten about reducing visible exhaust from the ferry while in port. AMHS opted to replace the generators entirely, and the upcoming shipyard period presented the opportunity to address another important upgrade. The ferry’s central control system software was no longer supported by the manufacturer, which left it vulnerable to pitfalls associated with controls system obsolescence. After supporting AMHS through the shipyard bid process, Glosten helped remap the ferry’s control system on a new, well-supported platform. Currently in the testing phase, the new platform will be loaded onto the ship’s system and then undergo a second round of testing. The Kennicott arrived at Everett Ship Repair in January and is expected to return to Alaska this summer a cleaner, more up-to-date ferry. #marineengineering #controlsystems #ferries

The challenges—and stakes—for private operators confronted with decarbonizing their fleets are greater than ever, and they look a lot different from those facing their publicly funded counterparts. A former tugboat captain who spent half his career in the industry’s private sector, Glosten Principal Peter Soles shares his take on the obstacles that exist for workboats and smaller, privately owned craft and their paralyzing effect in the February issue of Marine Log. The first slabs of steel for the R/V Thuwal II have been cut, officially kicking off construction on KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology) University of Science and Technology’s new research vessel at Freire Shipyard - C.N.P.FREIRE, S.A. Transforming a vessel design from two dimensions into something tangible can sometimes be a many-years-long effort so it makes it all the more exciting when our projects reach milestones like this one and start taking shape. We look forward to continuing our support of the project and watching the evolution of their Red-Sea-ready research vessel as work progresses. Congratulations to KAUST! #navalarchitecture #marineengineering #shipdesign #shipbuilding #steelcutting KAUST Core Labs
