Callery Pear Trees Begin to Bloom: Registration Opens March 17 for 2025 “Buyback” Event. The Missouri Invasive Plant Council (MoIP), in partnership with Forest ReLeaf of Missouri, Forrest Keeling Nursery, and the Missouri Department of Conservation, will host a Callery pear “buyback” program in locations around the state on April 22. On this date, citizens who register with a photo of a cut down Callery pear tree from their property will receive a free potted, native tree between 2 and 4 feet tall, in 3-gallon containers. Registration for the Callery Pear Buyback event is open from March 17 through April 17. When registering, participants choose a native tree and submit a photo of the cut-down Callery pear tree. One free, non-invasive, native tree will be given to registered participants at the selected location on the day of the event, April 22, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. To register or for more information about this event, including a full list of native tree species offered and how to identify Callery pear trees, visit https://lnkd.in/gUSfDJNE, or contact MoIP Coordinator Emily Render, (573) 569-8659, at [email protected]. The shamrock has a long history in Ireland and is a symbol of the country's national identity. It's associated with St. Patrick, who used it to teach the Holy Trinity to the Irish in the 5th century. The shamrock's three leaves are said to represent the Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. It's a type of trefoil plant, and for centuries has been considered Ireland's unofficial national flower. The Druids believed the shamrock had magical powers and used it to ward off evil. It became a symbol of rebellion in the 19th century, and anyone wearing it risked death by hanging. The four-leafed clover is considered a sign of luck, with each leaf representing faith, hope, love, and luck. The shamrock is used in modern agriculture as a soil-improving cover crop, food for livestock, beekeeping, natural dyeing, and homeopathic medicine. For a Zone 6 garden, consider planting "False Shamrock" or Oxalis triangularis for a similar look to shamrocks, or explore other Oxalis species like Oxalis regnellii or Oxalis violacea. #shamrocks #HappyStPatricksDay #groundcovers #gardens #gardening #GloriousGardensSTL

Early spring is the time for restorative pruning. At this point, plants are dormant but the risk of frost has passed, making it safer to do this type of work. Restorative pruning can help: Shape the plant, because bare branches make it easier to see the plant's structure. Reduce stress, because pruning dormant plants minimizes shock. Prevent disease, because there are fewer active pests and fungi, which means lower infection risks. Redirect energy, because resources go to healthy buds instead of dead branches. #restorativepruning #gardentips #gardens #gardening #springinthegarden #pruning #GloriousGardensSTL
