One year ago, Global Rescue was on the ground in Israel, evacuating and protecting members trapped by the Hamas attacks. This anniversary is a reminder of how quickly things can change when traveling, and why a Global Rescue membership and its mission matters: to help you travel with confidence, knowing we’re here to bring you to safety in the event of a crisis. Watch how we made it happen in Israel when our members needed us most. #october7

Our 20 Year Countdown: 2020! When Michael Blease-Shepley left his home in the United Kingdom on March 14th, 10 days before widespread restrictions were enacted by the British government, it was for a three-week work assignment in Nigeria. He didn’t know the outbreak was going to turn into a pandemic. Global Rescue officials kept Blease-Shepley appraised. He realized he would likely need to remain sheltered for about 10 days. “During the next week and a half there were no government repatriation flights. Global Rescue had a team of special operations experts working to obtain a private aircraft to get me out – but the permitting was troublesome and could not be obtained from local officials. I was also running out of food,” he said. Global Rescue stepped in to help on that front, arranging for the pickup and delivery of a five-day supply of groceries for Blease-Shepley. “I really don’t know how my guy at Global Rescue did that. It was pretty nice getting those steaks and other provisions.” At the end of 10 days, numerous calls, meetings, planning and a few false starts brought on by the unprecedented circumstances, Global Rescue managed to get Blease-Shepley on a repatriation flight. “She had spoken to someone at the American Embassy and – I believe – the Global Rescue operations team and then next thing I knew I was on a repatriation flight set for Wednesday afternoon – in a business class seat no less.” The late-night notification gave Global Rescue less than 12 hours to arrange for an armed security team to collect Blease-Shepley and transport him to the airport. “I was picked up by a private security team. The lead vehicle was manned with several armed guards. I was in the middle car. The trailing vehicle also had several armed guards in the back. I’m used to armed security details but this was a bit more firepower than I’d seen before,” he said. Blease-Shepley made it home safely and was immediately ordered into a seven-day isolation. Blease-Shepley had spent the better part of 50 days in isolation in Nigeria. Our 20 Year Countdown: 2021! Montana resident and avid fly fisher Dolly Webster and her partner Michael Smith set off for a six-day fishing trip to the island of Great Inagua. Little did they know one of them would catch more than fish. The tiny island is 375 miles/604 kilometers southeast of Nassau, the Bahamas. It’s a paradise for fly fishing enthusiasts who are seeking tarpon, bonefish and permit. A day or so before their trip ended, the pair needed to obtain negative COVID-19 tests before returning to the U.S. She and her partner followed COVID-19 protocols to the letter; masking, physically distancing, taking part in outdoor activities like fishing, and obtaining negative PCR tests before traveling to the island nation. Smith’s test at the end of the fishing trip was negative. Webster’s was positive. She was stunned. They researched all their options, including one where Smith — who was permitted to travel — would fly to the U.S. Upon his arrival, he planned to obtain the needed treatment medicine, specifically monoclonal antibody treatments that help the body fight COVID-19. The medicine was unavailable on the island. Smith figured he would return to Great Inagua with the medicine for Dolly. Fortunately, the option Smith chose was to call Global Rescue. “He reported Dolly had been experiencing what they thought was a head cold since the previous Saturday, but symptoms had elevated and now resembled the flu,” according to Carlene Merola, a Global Rescue medical operations senior specialist. “We understood the situation and the urgency for an appropriate medical evaluation. This was a field rescue and she needed a level of hospital care not available on the island so we arranged an immediate air ambulance transport to a hospital where she could receive appropriate medical care. We knew we had to get her out as soon as possible,” said Jeff Weinstein, Global Rescue medical operations supervisor. It was a comfort for Dolly, who knew that getting treatment as soon as possible was vital to recovery. After the jet arrived, the in-flight medical team conducted a medical examination to monitor Dolly’s condition. The couple boarded the evacuation jet and made their way to Miami. When the couple arrived at the airport, they were transported to the hospital by a vehicle arranged for by Global Rescue. Dolly was immediately admitted, examined and began receiving monoclonal antibody treatment. Our 20 Year Countdown: 2022! An international trip combining tropical adventures at sea as well as rest and relaxation in a paradise setting is an infrequent occurrence, especially if you’re the father and son of a Texas-based, family-run energy business. When Johnnie Odum and his adult son Bryce finally boarded an international flight from Texas to Central America, they knew their deep sea fishing in Costa Rica was going to be a special one. During the international flight from the U.S. to Costa Rica, Johnnie Odum experienced three heart-related incidents on the plane. “It felt like a blackout. I didn’t know what was going on. Neither did my son or the flight attendants. I learned later my heart was stopping for a few seconds and then re-starting periodically,” he said. The duo landed in San Jose, the capital of Costa Rica. They were scheduled to take a short flight to Golfito the next day, but they were uncertain about the severity of the incidents. The Odums went directly to a hotel, which turned out to be fortuitous. “As soon as we got to the hotel in San Jose, I asked my son to go to the front desk and call an ambulance. I knew I needed to go to the hospital,” he said. What’s emergency care in Costa Rica like? Fortunately, the country has one of the best health care systems in Central America. Odum was taken to a local hospital with a good reputation. The medical staff immediately took him to the emergency room after he explained his symptoms. “While I was hospitalized, Bryce contacted my wife and she called Global Rescue. The next thing I knew, a Global Rescue paramedic showed up at my bedside to monitor my condition, confer with the hospital medical team, and ultimately be my medical escort back to my home hospital of choice in Texas,” he said. After a few days, Odum was cleared fit to fly and the Global Rescue paramedic and operations team arranged the return trip home. “The paramedic stayed with me the entire time: from my bedside through the flight home and the ground transport from the airport to the Texas hospital. He monitored my blood pressure and other vitals regularly to make certain I wasn’t in distress,” Odum said. Once Odum arrived at his home hospital of choice, a Global Rescue medical escort remained on site throughout the hospital admitting process and made certain to brief the receiving medical staff, especially regarding the blood pressure issues.
