Conducting empirical research on sensitive topics like gold mining demands not only meticulous planning but also patience, focus, and adaptability—especially in the Peruvian Amazon, where climate change adds to the unpredictability. Cash assistance is an especially important form of life-saving aid with both immediate and long-term impacts. Last August, we partnered with Save the Children Australia and Fiji to better understand those impacts amidst environmental disaster followed by a global pandemic. Cash assistance generally targets urgent, often short-term humanitarian needs. This study uniquely centers on an intervention that evolved over time to target protracted vulnerabilities across Fiji’s Central, West, and North divisions. The agility of cash assistance allowed the intervention to reach a record 39,000 households who received nearly $20 million USD total between December 2020 to January 2022. The ripple effect of cash assistance resulted in an estimated additional 27 million USD in GDP growth (multiplier effect: 2.05) across the Fijian economy. Data indicates interventions of this sort reduce negative coping mechanisms, equalize vulnerability across risk factors, and invite reciprocity between neighbors and community markets. Results were mediated by inflation and COVID-19 restrictions. More findings detailed in the attached report.
