Using evidence-based research to answer our most sensitive questions in fragile contexts.

关于我们

Global Insight brings together an interdisciplinary team of scholars and independent researchers to tackle our most politically and culturally sensitive questions in partnership with practitioners. We work across sectors in fragile contexts to produce data-driven, gender-sensitive, multi-methods empirical research. Our work is designed to identify, map, and measure the causal mechanisms at the root of conflict, displacement, and vulnerability. We are experts in a range of quantitative and qualitative approaches, preferring to develop multi-method studies. Our commitment to scientific rigor is matched by our dedication to research that is unafraid of tackling sensitive questions and working in the most challenging contexts. Global Insight researchers work across sectors to identify, map, and measure the causal mechanisms at the root of conflict, displacement, and vulnerability. Our work often takes the form of applied research, program evaluation, and novel data science projects. We also offer one-off and full-series courses for those undertaking scientific multi-methods research, analyzing and interpreting data, and applying findings in fragile contexts and the Global Insight Institute. Global Insight scholars and independent researchers work in collaborative teams with the aim of adhering to the highest ethical standards, centering the wellbeing of participants, and encouraging research transparency. Research designs are frequently submitted for review by our panels of experts during annual network meetings. The feedback offered during these meetings promotes creative research design and the use of innovative instruments. We seek to foster partnerships between practitioners, donors, and researchers. Findings from our work are shared with external audiences, including policymakers and donors, during events held throughout the year.

?? Very motivated to have been part of the Expert Validation Workshop for the study “Health Equity Benefits of Adequate Housing.” This research explores how improving informal settlements can impact the health and well-being of women and girls—and accelerate progress toward the #SDGs. It was exciting to discuss the findings with such an incredible group of experts. My key takeaways: ?? The need to approach solution-building with a gender perspective cuts across every field that aims to build a better future. Like housing design and infrastructure, many everyday systems are built in ways that deeply impact women’s well-being. ?? Building statistical and methodological models that capture the complexity of the female experience is challenging—but essential. Our approaches must be as intersectional as the challenges we aim to solve. Thank you to Hábitat para la Humanidad México and the Global Insight team for inviting me to such a thoughtful discussion.

For nearly three years, our team has been quietly leading groundbreaking research on the impact of Violence Prevention Network USA's RESTORE Project—an innovative approach to scaling P/CVE (Preventing/Countering Violent Extremism) programming. We are excited to soon share our comprehensive report, which delves into the complexities of driving meaningful change in spaces that are actively working to heal and rebuild from the scars of hate. Stay tuned for insights that highlight the profound impact of this critical work. Get in touch to explore how we can help your organization measure, understand and better communicate your impact at [email protected] or https://g-insight.org/ #PCVE #research #impact #data

After five days of intense learning, Violence Prevention Network USA's RESTORE training is coming to a close. This week, we worked with an incredible group of behavioral health professionals, social workers, community and faith leaders, campus police officers among many others —people who are showing up every day to strengthen #communitysafety and #socialcohesion. Our training isn’t just theory; it’s about equipping people with the tools to recognize and intervene when someone is on the path toward #violentextremism. We practiced difficult but necessary conversations, explored biographical work and social diagnostics, and challenged ourselves to see new ways forward. The energy in the room today is a mix of exhaustion and inspiration—the kind that comes from doing hard but meaningful work. And while the training ends here, the work doesn’t. Our participants will take these skills back to their communities, and we’ll keep supporting them in difficult situations. A huge thank you to our trainers and most importantly, to everyone who showed up ready to learn, challenge themselves, and commit to this mission. #RESTOREtraining #ViolencePrevention #EndHate #CommunityFirst #BuildingResilience #RealChange

If informal settlements were upgraded at scale, the world would be healthier, wealthier, and more educated. Moreover, this upgrading initiative is also an investment in women’s health, which will improve key development outcomes for entire countries. *1) It is a strategic initiative since most women, especially those living in informal settlements, have poor living conditions and poor dwelling houses. Houses with poor ventilation will cause respiratory problems since, in some cultures, women have to cook. Many of them inhale the smoke produced by stoves. If they have to cook outside their houses, that is, on a small alley in front of their house, people and motorbikes could pass, making the food unhygienic. Overpopulation is a common issue in informal settlements, and it can be predicted that there will be a problem with clean water. The septic tank can contaminate the water if households in the area have dug a well or borehole for clean water to be close to one another. This condition will cause diarrhea and gastrointestinal infections and can be widespread in the area. Moreover, it creates stress in tropical areas as more clean water is needed for the families during the dry season for drinking and bathing. Furthermore, inadequate toilets could increase the risk of sexual and gender-based violence if the communal toilets are unsafe for women. Those mentioned above are just some of the problems studied by Global Insight, which Habitat for Humanity International assigned to find out how informal settlement upgrading affects women’s health and gender equity in health. Housing and settlement experts gathered at Habitat for Humanity Indonesia's office, and other experts who were present virtually had in-depth discussions to validate the study and gave input. Global Insight sought input not only from experts but also from informal settlement residents. Hence, Habitat Indonesia facilitated the workshop with a group of women and local leaders in Tanjung Kait in Tangerang Regency. During the discussion with the experts, the land certificate as legal proof of ownership was found to be one of the most essential aspects. For instance, Habitat Indonesia's intervention in Tanjung Kait, which supports the residents in having legal land titling, is meaningful to them. Those who have lived in someone's land for two to three generations knew they could be expelled anytime. Now, they can plan for their future. Another important aspect is that if the community is well supported in financial literacy, they are able to establish a cooperative. If the money can be managed properly, the community can use it for various purposes, including improving its communal areas for better living. Transforming informal settlements into healthy communities requires a marathon effort of multi-stakeholder collaboration. Every party should find its place and deliver its best assistance. Evidence suggests men pay higher tax rates where income tax progressivity is higher, due to their higher average income. This should be a gender equalizing factor. Leading Global Insight's Poverty & Inequality portfolio, Dr. Morgan Richards-Melamdir finds in reality tax progressivity has counterintuitive impacts on gender equality. Using data from the Luxembourg Income Study, Dr. Richards-Melamdir designed a novel approach that engages fixed effects regressions and contribution analysis to find that reductions in tax progressivity are associated with increases in women’s tax rates as well as smaller post-tax benefits for women relative to men. These findings raise concerns that growth-oriented tax policy decisions may be problematic from a gender equity lens. Join Global Insight Principal Investigator Dr. Morgan Richards-Melamdir next week at the LIS Cross-National Data Center in Luxembourg + LSE International Inequalities Institute Comparative Economic Inequality Conference in Luxembourg where she will be presenting this groundbreaking research. https://lnkd.in/gt7e7rGR More about Global Insight at https://g-insight.org/ #taxation #research #data #quant #bigdata #women #gender #grb #poverty #inequality

#HumanitarianAid #Migration #Colombia #USAID #StopWorkOrder #CommunityResilience #Data #Impact

???????????? ???????? ?????????????????? ??????????????????, ?????????????? ???????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???????????????? ???????????? ?????? ???? ????????????. IMPACT: In times of crisis, strategic investments—not cuts—create long-term stability. Recent US policy changes have frozen funding for key humanitarian programs, leaving millions vulnerable across Latin America. Take Colombia as an example—a country shaped by armed conflict, the climate crisis, and drug trafficking, while also serving as the primary destination for those displaced from Venezuela. 1.5 million Venezuelans require emergency food aid, 40% of households experience food insecurity, and 15% lack access to healthcare. With 2.8 million seeking refuge in Colombia, the need for humanitarian support is urgent. Yet, the recent #USAID #stopworkorders have halted life-saving programs in the country run by respected organizations like Mercy Corps and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Funding suspensions immediately and without notice make shelter, employment, and basic services inaccessible. These cuts do not just affect Venezuelans—they further strain Colombia’s fragile systems. In 2023 alone, over 175,000 Colombians were displaced by violence and 1.7 million people were impacted by climate-related disasters. At a time when regional resilience is critical, these cuts only deepen instability. Without funding, programs that provide cash assistance, healthcare, and education have been forced to stop. The reality? 81.7% of displaced Venezuelans now in Colombia intend to stay, but without adequate support, more will be pushed to seek opportunities elsewhere—including the United States. Rather than deterring migration, cutting humanitarian aid may actually increase movement toward the US border. At Global Insight, we work with organizations to navigate policy shifts, communicate policy and programmatic impacts, and identify funding diversification strategies to sustain critical programs. Now, more than ever, collaboration and data-driven storytelling are essential to securing long-term investment in humanitarian solutions. Let’s connect. If your organization is facing challenges due to recent US policy changes, our team can help. IMPACT: In a small village outside Herat, Mawlawi Mohammad* made a decision that would ripple through his community. As a respected faith leader, his stance on girls' education carried weight – and for years, that meant girls typically left school after learning to write their names. His own wife and daughter followed this path, as had countless others before them. But everything changed when Mawlawi Mohammad delved deeper into his faith's teachings on education. Through careful study of the Quran and thoughtful deliberation with his peers, he discovered a profound truth: his religious tradition supported girls advancing much further in their studies. Today, his daughter has returned to school, his wife attends literacy classes, and he advocates for girls' education throughout his community. This is what transformation looks like – one faith leader, one family, one community at a time.?Our USAID and NGO partners have been at the forefront of supporting such changes. The numbers tell a stark story. In 2023, USAID's education programs reached nearly 270,000 Afghan girls and young women, creating pathways to learning despite immense challenges. They supported 284,684 primary learners, helped 88,500 girls access community-based education, and established 4,630 new classrooms. Even further, for the 86,000 households receiving USAID cash assistance, this support made the difference between keeping their daughters in school or early exit. But now, this progress hangs by a thread. The recent suspension of USAID assistance threatens these vital programs. Already, 1.1 million adolescent girls are banned from schools, and without continued support, the situation will only worsen. This isn’t just about education – it's about the future of Afghanistan itself. When we educate girls, we strengthen families, build resilient communities, and create pathways out of poverty. Mawlawi Mohammad's story shows us what is possible when we support local leaders who champion education. But for every Mawlawi Mohammad, there are countless others who need support to make similar transformations. Education is not a privilege – it is a fundamental right. And right now, millions of Afghan girls are watching, waiting, and hoping the world will not turn its back on their dreams. Our team is here to help your organization grow and navigate these challenges. Together we can amplify your impact through better data, innovative visuals, and compelling narratives.?Reach out at [email protected] to learn more. #AfghanEducation #GirlsEducation #GlobalDevelopment #HumanRights #USAID #Afghanistan #stopworkorder #humanitarian * Name changed for anonymity. Mawlawi Mohammad was a participant in a USAID-funded program evaluated by our team before the most recent Taliban takeover.

IMPACT: USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance committed nearly $10B to humanitarian assistance in 2023. This included life-saving support in Afghanistan, Haiti, northern Ethiopia, the South Caucasus, Sudan, and Ukraine, and response to flooding in Libya and Pakistan, earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria, and an earthquake in Morocco. US funds were paired with other donors to the tune of $21.8B globally. At 45.8% of global humanitarian spending, USAID’s support is vital to programs like those we worked with in Türkiye. In the early hours of February 6, 2023, two massive earthquakes rocked Türkiye and Syria, forever changing millions of lives. What followed demonstrates the remarkable power of coordinated humanitarian action. Working alongside German, Dutch, British and other donors, including private sector partners, USAID turned $83M in initial funding into a lifeline for millions. The impact is more than just numbers:? - Families who lost everything found emergency shelter? - Communities regained access to clean water? - Local markets revived through cash assistance programs? ? With a narrower lens, our NGO partner mobilized $56M in funding to reach 1.3M+ affected people, including refugees previously displaced by nearby conflict in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Iran. Working with 9 local partners, the team provided life-saving support to 252,569 people in Türkiye and another 1,078,718 in Northwest Syria who were then able to rebuild their lives and regain their economic footing. From safe drinking water to shelter, USAID humanitarian assistance has tangible and direct impacts on the lives of those surviving natural disasters, conflict, drought, and famine. The Türkiye earthquake response shows us what's possible when global resources meet local resilience. Behind every dollar spent is a story of survival, recovery, and renewal - a testament to humanity's capacity to rise stronger from disaster. This is not just about disaster response. It’s about believing that when tragedy strikes anywhere, help can come from everywhere. #Humanitarian #GlobalDevelopment #USAID #DisasterResponse #InternationalAid #Leadership #CommunityResilience #stopworkorder
