The day began with inspiring speakers, traditional songs, and dances in the amphitheater, creating an atmosphere of reflection and respect. Welcomed by SAC President Annebelle Nery, attendees gathered for a luncheon where Dr. Nery shared opening remarks, leaders from the Acjachemen Nation led a land acknowledgment, and Chancellor Marvin Martinez spoke. Congressman Lou Correa also honored Dr. Nery with a certificate of recognition. Additional speakers included Academic Senate President Claire M. Coyne, Inter Tribal Council Club President Tukwot Hamalu Momt Naka Gollette, and Lupe Lopez. An estimated 24.9 million people are trapped in forced labor, sexual exploitation, and human trafficking worldwide. Recent high-profile cases have brought this crisis to the forefront: Sean "Diddy" Combs: The renowned music mogul was arrested on September 16, 2024, facing charges including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking. Allegations suggest he used his influence to operate a sex trafficking enterprise. Combs has pleaded not guilty and is currently detained without bail, with a trial set for May 2025. This case underscore the pervasive nature of human trafficking, cutting across all societal strata. Awareness and education are crucial in ending this global crisis. Orange County is a Hotspot for Human Trafficking! Between 2019 and early 2023, the Orange County Sheriff's Department Human Trafficking and Vice unit arrested approximately 77 traffickers and 251 of their clients. In most cases, trafficking involves a combination of grooming, recruitment, manipulation, coercion, and control tactics. Identifying and preventing Human Trafficking requires awareness of the signs and risk factors associated with this crime, as well as a commitment to reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities or organizations dedicated to combating trafficking.
