#COP29 Climate Finance Deals Leaves Millions of Lives On Line As UN member states launched a barrage of objections to the gavelling through of the climate finance deal - the, New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG), the Global Climate and Health Alliance reacted: “The USD$300 billion per year deal negotiated in Baku is weak, shortsighted and wholly inadequate to address the mounting threats of the climate crisis, and fails to protect the millions of lives on the line”, said Jessica Beagley Beagley, Policy Lead at the Global Climate and Health Alliance,? a consortium of more than 200 health professional and health civil society organisations from around the world. “Countries, especially those of the global south, are facing extreme weather that is causing huge economic losses, overburdening health systems, and causing injuries, death, and disease for the people of developing countries”, said Beagley “Without adequate financing, developing countries will not be able to build any sort of resilience to the threats from the climate crisis - so wealthy countries must take responsibility and agree to scale up public funding. The health of people in every country depends on it.” “At COP29, the US and other developed countries failed to meet their responsibilities under the Paris Agreement to financially assist developing countries to deal with the devastating impacts of climate change”, said Jeni Miller, Executive Director of the Global Climate and Health Alliance. “

GCHA mobilises the global health community and accelerates climate action to improve health for all.

Every day, and in every country, the climate crisis is already having devastating effects on people’s health, overwhelming healthcare systems and causing governments to spend billions responding to this ever growing emergency. Despite this, action to tackle the climate crisis is stalled. The Global Climate and Health Alliance (GCHA) was founded in 2011 and unites and mobilises the health community on the climate crisis to accelerate climate action and protect and improve health for all. We are a global network of 200+ organisations spanning every continent and our member and partner organisations represent more than 46 million health workers globally. From community midwives and NGOs, to health ministers and policymakers, health voices are trusted messengers in their communities. We unite health voices to drive real climate action towards a healthier and more sustainable future for everyone, everywhere. Many of the solutions to the climate crisis are also health solutions, with major benefits for our health and wellbeing. GCHA works to ensure that these co-benefits, and the health impacts of the climate crisis, are embedded in climate action at the local, national and global level. GCHA co-chairs the WHO-Civil Society Working Group on Climate & Health and collaborates with organisations and agencies around the world on evidence-based advocacy, policy work, movement building, research and strategic communications. We have a unique opportunity to improve health for all and to tackle global inequality, if we act fast. Learn more at: climateandhealthalliance.org

?? ? Meet some of our amazing members who attended #COP29 in Baku (Azerbaijan) and advocated for #health to be at the core of climate decisions. While the climate conference has so far disappointed in delivering the kind of bold commitments required to protect people's health and well-being, our work is not stopping here and being part of an active community is the best first step you can take as a health professional concerned with climate change. "If #COP29 agrees on the text shown to us today, it will sign a death sentence for millions. Such a deal would be a bad deal not just for developing countries already under pressure from the climate crisis, but for the entire world." “If #COP29 agrees on the text shown to us today, it would sign a death sentence for millions”, said?Jessica Beagley, Policy Lead at the Global Climate and Health Alliance,?a consortium of more than 200 health professional and health civil society organisations from around the world. “Such a deal would be a bad deal not just for developing countries already under pressure from the climate crisis, but for the entire world.” “Before COP29 closes, negotiators must come up with a near term, concrete commitment at a scale commensurate with the health threats already faced by communities, based on grants from wealthy countries”, added?Beagley.?“The current text leaves the doors wide open to loans and private sector finance, which risk locking developing countries into further cycles of debt, poverty and disease. While human lives hang in the balance, COP29 risks offering fossil fuel companies a get out of jail free card, with references to fossil fuel subsidies and the obligation of polluters to pay removed from the text.” “The latest COP29 climate finance proposal makes a mockery of the UNFCCC process that should not only address the legitimate needs of developing countries, but also drive home the legitimate responsibilities of wealthy, developed nations”, said?Dr Jeni Miller, Executive Director of the Global Climate and Health Alliance. “Many of the countries most impacted by climate change are already paying more to service their international loans than the combined budgets for their health systems and education, with devastating impacts on people’s health and wellbeing. It is unconscionable that wealthy countries are proposing a climate finance deal that could worsen the debt burden of countries facing the brunt of a climate crisis they did not cause.” “As people around the world experience first hand the devastating impacts of heat, storms, floods, and droughts, the failure of developed countries to step up to their responsibilities is completely unacceptable, not to mention profoundly shortsighted”, added?Miller. “COP29 negotiators have got to go back into the negotiating rooms and fix this, in the remaining hours of this summit. The people of the world, and their health care providers, are watching, and lives are at stake.” https://lnkd.in/dmHKukKy

While talks are stalled at #COP29, Associated Press invited NGOs to play Daybreak - a board game where players’ joint objective is to curb #climatechange. GCHA Vice-Chair & Canadian emergency room doctor, Courtney Howard took the plunge for us. Playing the U.S. she hurried to give her “debt reparations” card to her co-player from World Resources Institute [ representing the "rest of the world"] with these words: “I feel very guilty for my historical emissions.” - The U.S. has contributed to most emissions of any country. Despite good moves, quickly the game turned sour & temperatures went beyond 1.5°C limit set by #ParisAgreement. “There is a political message to the game: winning, or stopping the world from runaway temperature rise, is doable but hard & requires dramatic early action” said the game co-designer Matt Leacock Thank you Seth Borenstein for instilling some fun in #COP29 & well done Courtney! We know you don't like boardgames ;) & how much you take the issue of #Health & Climate seriously. https://lnkd.in/dNVB_Dph

As the #COP29 climate summit draws towards its final days, the?Global Climate and Health Alliance?today called on wealthy countries to end their blockade of the climate finance deal, and commit to provide at least one trillion USD of grants-based finance annually in order to protect people and their health health from the worst impacts of climate change. This week, delegations including the?US,?EU,?Canada,?Australia,?Switzerland,?France, and?Japan?have been blocking a deal on climate finance claiming that an investment-centric approach is required rather than the significant public grants and concessional finance they are obliged to provide, under?article 9 of the Paris Agreement.

? #HealthyNDCs: Tell your governments! (deadline Feb. 25) ? ?? Including #Health in #NDCs is no brainer & benefits all. "Health cost of #airpollution specifically is missing from two-thirds of national climate plans submitted by countries to the U.N. We need to not only reduce GHG emissions from energy sector but Govs need to think of how lowering people's #airpollution exposure can lead to less asthma & heart attacks. These health benefits offset the costs of taking action." said @JeniMiller Exec. Dir. from The Global Climate And Health Alliance. Similarly, when it comes to #Heat exposure, Marina Belén Romanello, PhD, one of the authors of the Lancet report said: "There is an increase in the number of sleep hours lost because of heat exposure. So people are losing the capacity to adequately rest, which obviously impacts mental and physical health." ??
