Attending the 29th Conference of Parties as an Observer for Global Choices from Pakistan feels over wgemling. If I think back as The Little Fresh Environmentalist who just stepped out to the world to work in 2018, I never could have imagined that I would one day be attending the biggest climate summit in 2024, as I am no expert.... But life, as always, had its own surprises! COP is always an overwhelming experience—a massive event that stirs a whirlwind of emotions. You feel confused, nervous, happy, and sad all at once. And when it comes to policy, it's mostly frustration. Everyone here comes with different goals and aims. My goal aligns to what one of a colleague recently said that It’s about participation, not just representation. For me, active participation means learning, sharing knowledge, and building meaningful connections. It also means speaking with responsibility about the urgent challenges we face due to climate change in Pakistan. A lot has happened since I arrived, spoke at few events, met with some key personelles and I’ll be sharing some important glimpses of my participation soon. For now, here are a few snippets of representation & experiences at COP29. I’m primarily showcasing my work with the Pakistan Youth Biodiversity Network (PYBN) and Sustrendz , highlighting how these initiatives align with the mission of Global Choices. From the Poles to the People: COP29 Week One Round-Up As COP29 unfolds in Baku, global leaders face a pivotal moment to address the urgent need for climate finance. ?? What’s at stake? Developed nations are falling short on financial commitments, leaving developing countries—many disproportionately impacted by climate disasters—in dire need of support. With estimated needs ranging from $1–1.3 trillion, agreements remain far from finalized. COP29 president Mukhtar Babayev reminders World Leader to ‘be brave’, he says, "politicians have the power to reach a fair and ambitious deal. They must deliver on this responsibility." Today, our Arctic Angels spoke at Extreme Hangout Fire Side Chat on We Can't Plant Ice! They spoke about why the frozen ocean, especially the Central Arctic Ocean Ice Shield as a Global Commons, offers an opportunity for creative, inclusive and climate just governance. Beth Doherty shared with us today, "losing the Arctic threatens our entire Earth system. At COP, it is crucial that action to protect the Arctic is high on the agenda, that we preserve the ice while we still can, and that we end emissions as quickly as possible." At #COP16 in Colombia, leaders from around the world call for ‘a year of united action on climate, nature and food’. In a letter to President Petro of Colombia and President Lula of Brazil, a group of leaders – representing business, finance, science, civil society, Indigenous Peoples, and youth – have announced their support for the COP16 and COP30 Presidents to mobilize actors globally in a year of united action from Cali to Belém. With leadership from Colombia and Brazil, signatories point to the next 12 months as an historic opportunity for the world to: ?? Strengthen national climate and biodiversity plans ?? Scale up investment for nature and food systems transformation ???
