We were honored to host Dr. Stacey Dixon, Principal Deputy Director of National Intelligence, last week as we convened members of our Emerging Leaders community for a special, thought-provoking discussion that covered topics like the new technological age, cross-sector collaboration, and leadership strategies. We are incredibly grateful to Dr. Dixon and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence for their continued support for and engagement with our Emerging Leaders Program! While we can’t share all the details from this off-the-record event ??, experiences like these are just one of the many reasons the Council’s Emerging Leaders Program is so impactful for Chicago's future leaders. "We're here in #Chicago, one of the cities that's been most impacted by recent migration waves," Katie Tobin, a nonresident scholar with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told a Chicago Council on Global Affairs audience earlier this week. "I think one thing that would be interesting to see in the coming years is if we can have more of a federal plan for how we ensure that cities in the United States that are most impacted by new arrivals also have the support that they need when it comes to housing, and that there's a distribution of migrants and refugees across the United States so that they're more strategically plugged in to where the jobs are, where we're seeing the greatest labor shortages, and so that there's no one city that is sort of disproportionately impacted." ? In the US, record-breaking border crossings and waves of recent arrivals relocating to cities across the country have once again pushed the issue to the forefront of voters’ minds ahead of November. Tobin joined Marco Lopez of Intermestic Capital, Andrew Selee of the Migration Policy Institute, and Clifford Young of Ipsos US Public Affairs to discuss how and why migration is playing an especially important role in this year’s global elections.? ? Moderated a fascinating panel at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs on the political and electoral implications of #immigration. Title: “The Border at the Ballot Box”. Link here: https://shorturl.at/cGmCe It was a great riff with a very weighty panel of immigration and policy experts. Andrew Selee Katie Tobin Marco Lopez. We discussed a wide-range of issues, including: (1) The impact of immigration on politics around the world. It is global! (2) “Push-Pull factors” behind immigration. (3) The impact of migration on border communities. (4) Identity politics in America and immigration. Immigration politics is not about immigration!? (5) An assessment of different immigration policies and platforms. (6) Border security and migration (7) “Common sense” policies looking forward. Really worth the watch.
