I am really, really not going to #COP28. Not only because of the reasons I listed in my last post, but I just did some basic #math. I was curious to think about all the money being spent by the climate community for this event that is, in the end, benefitting the oil-rich UAE economy. After some simple math, here is my estimation. **Disclaimer: I don't know how much really is being spent to fuel the UAE economy (pun intended), and it ultimately depends on how many people actually go, but, whatever the real number, it is a shit tonne.** I am estimating that $226,275,000 (yes, $226 million USD) is being spent by our resource-scarce community to go to UAE for this corrupt COP process, instead of on real #climatesolutions. Here is how I came up with the number: - It is estimated that 70,000 people are flying to Dubai. - On average, I assume ~$1,000 for the roundtrip ticket (this is conservative) - For accommodation, I assume $150 per day (this is REALLY conservative) - For food & beverage, I assume a paltry $60 per day (like this is even possible in Dubai) - For travel around this massive city to attend events spread out over many kilometers for urban traffic, I assume only $25 per day ( ?? ) - Finally, I assume that 50% of the total attendees will only stay for 7 days; 25% will stay for 10 days, and 25% for 14 days. And the total comes out to be a conservative US$226 million. The actual number is probably at least double this. And that is just the BASICS TO BE THERE. This is not accounting for the millions and millions spent on the side events, pavilions, zones, media, etc. etc. etc. all benefitting the UAE economy instead of solutions. ?? I appreciate all who are going to be voices on-the-ground for real solutions, ending fossil fuels for good, and supporting an equitable transformation of our global economy. But I, for one, am glad I backed out of all the invites and will save my money for new and different events like the one RegenIntel is planning called the #ReCOPs - regional, representative, regenerative Conferences of the Peoples. The assumption that UNFCCC COPs are just too important to miss is, I think, a fallacy of hubris. The vast majority of decisions made by governments are not impacted at all most people and organizations that go and hold events outside the closed doors of the negotiating rooms. But these people and organizations can have great power and influence when we gather and unite with purpose and integrity.
