“By 2035, #solar PV overtakes coal-fired and gas-fired generation to become the main source of #electricity”. ? But we think we could do it even earlier...? The International Energy Agency (IEA)’s World Energy Outlook 2024 is out! Here are our main takeaways: ?“Clean energy is entering the energy system at an unprecedented rate”. Solar in particular is leading the way in terms of installed capacity, with a new record of 425GW.?? ?Solar is expected to contribute over half of the #cleanenergy capacity needed in the report’s Net Zero scenario. But the IEA only call for 7,000 TWh of additional solar capacity by 2035 in this scenario, and with over 1.1 TW of global solar manufacturing capacity today we know the industry can deliver much more.? ?“Rapid expansion of #manufacturing in China resulted in a 50% reduction in #PVmodule costs since December 2022, which improved the #competitiveness of solar PV and boosted its uptake”. These cost reductions are critical to make the solar revolution more affordable for EMDE’s, and catalyze a #justtransition? ?“The share of #cleanenergy #investment in emerging markets and developing economies outside of China remains stuck at 15% of the total”. This imbalance of finance is a key topic GSC is addressing through its finance workstream, and will be critical this year at #COP29 in #Baku. The IEA summarized it perfectly: “A new energy system needs to be built to last: this means prioritising security, resilience and flexibility, and ensuring that the benefits of the new energy economy are shared”.?#SolarCanDeliver this new energy system, but now is #Time4Action to put in place the enabling policies on finance, #grids, supply chains, #skills, and more to make it possible to achieve #3xRenewables. The Global Solar Council (GSC) and ARMSA Academy are proud to announce a new partnership to address the critical need for harmonised #skills development in the global solar sector as part of the Solar Training Standardisation Initiative (STSI).? A recent #workforce analysis by McKinsey & Company revealed that of the 5 million solar PV employees, around 1.55 million white-collar workers play a decisive role in operational and safety outcomes yet remain underserved in management skills development. #Solar energy is set to play a pivotal role in the global energy transition, and it is crucial to ensure the availability of a skilled workforce with a trusted certification system capable of designing, installing, and maintaining solar power systems. Despite internal training programs by some manufacturers and utility solar industry players, there is perceived a pressing need for a standardized global training framework. ??♀? ??♂? Establishing training standards globally will provide a unified framework that elevates the solar workforce worldwide and supports the just, #sustainable, and quality development of #SolarEnergy.? Ireland ???? is a growing PV market and the GSC team were at the Solar Ireland 2024 conference today in Dublin.? Our CEO Sonia Dunlop delivered a keynote speech on the progress of #solar worldwide at the annual event?of the Irish Solar Energy Association (ISEA) Association in Dublin. The conference highlighted that investing in #SolarEnergy could create 7,000 skilled #jobs in Ireland, significantly boosting the country's GDP. ?? Other key elements were emphasised: ? #Grid reforms are necessary to reduce curtailment or “dispatch down” and protect investments. ?A solid PV recycling scheme needs to be put in place to ensure the #sustainability of the industry. ?There is a need to reform legislation on private wires, which are currently tricky to implement, to encourage direct power distribution. #SolarIreland2024 #EnergyTransition #RenewableEnergy #Sustainability Conall Bolger

GSC was at Solar & Storage Live UK 2024 in Birmingham to talk about our initiative, the Global Solar Training Standards Initiative (STSI). ?? Our CEO Sonia Dunlop attended the panel on “The Solar Training Standards Initiative - ensuring quality and safety for all 5 million solar workers”. The #solar industry is a fast-paced growing industry and to tackle the massive deployment needed to #3xRenewables, there is a need for skills planning and for more training standardisation to ensure the quality of the installations and #safety of all solar workers.????♀???♂? The Global Solar Council has therefore launched the Solar Training Standard Initiative (STSI) in partnership with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) and the ARMSA Academy, which provide management training in solar project development all over the world. This initiative aims to establish training #standards for the global industry, enhance #workforce efficiency, ensure safe solar deployment, and mobility in the industry through universal and transferable skills.?? This discussion was fruitful, especially with the input from our member Solar Energy UK from their Skills Working Group and the Renewable Energy Consumer Code who pledged their support for the STSI, suggesting to also include rooftop and consumer protection in its second phase.?? Our CEO Sonia Dunlop moderated the “Scaling up public and private #renewable energy finance” session at the Global Renewables Summit 2024. ?? The GSC is proud to be involved in this Heads of Government level event organized by the Global Renewables Alliance. ?? ? This public-private roundtable was precisely about collectively tackling the most pressing challenge for the development of renewables: #financing. ? By gathering government officials, intergovernmental officials, and private sector representatives, this roundtable sought to foster dialogue between industry, governments, and international organizations on how to achieve the #3xRenewables target by 2030. As most of the renewables investments are upfront, this can only be achieved through enhancing the availability of capital and lowering its cost. Our action also needs to take into account the global imbalance in access to finance, as in Emerging Markets and Economies (EMDEs) capital can be 3 to 5 times more expensive, hindering their effort to phase away from fossil fuel. This roundtable therefore explored barriers faced by countries and industries in accessing finance and identified solutions to unlock investment at a lower cost.
