"Who looks outside, DREAMS; Who looks inside, AWAKES." Carl Gustav Jung was a Swiss Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst that I ran across in my readings on self-development and personal growth. He was known for his theory of personality. The focus was on the interaction between the conscious and the subconscious mind. "Who looks outside, DREAMS..." This refers to focusing on the external world, on material possessions, social status, and external validation. Jung suggests that when we primarily focus on these things, we are essentially living in a "dream." This isn't a literal dream, but a state of being where we are driven by external forces and illusions, rather than our true selves. It implies a lack of genuine self-awareness and a reliance on external stimuli for fulfillment. This is a state of being where you are allowing outside influences to dictate your feelings, and actions. "...Who looks inside, AWAKES." This signifies introspection, self-reflection, and exploring the depths of one's own psyche. "Awakening" implies a shift from a passive, externally driven state to an active, conscious state. It's about becoming aware of one's own thoughts, feelings, motivations, and the unconscious aspects of the self. By looking inward, you are searching for your true self and understanding your own motivations. This is the process of individuation, a key concept in Jungian psychology, which involves integrating the conscious and unconscious aspects of the personality. In essence, the quote highlights the importance of: Self-awareness: Understanding your own inner world is crucial for personal growth and fulfillment. Individuation: The process of becoming a whole and integrated person. Moving beyond external illusions: Recognizing that true happiness and meaning come from within, not from external sources. Quitters' Friday = Fuzzy Thinking Yes, today is often called "Quitters' Friday"—the day many have given up on their New Year's resolutions. The problem wasn't the resolution itself, but the fuzzy thinking behind it. A resolution without clear goals and a strong "why" is destined to fail. To achieve any goal, you need: Clarity: A well-defined target, not a vague wish. Desire: A deep emotional connection to the outcome. This "why" allows you to create a vivid mental image and an emotional link to your desired result. As Napoleon Hill said in Think and Grow Rich, you must have "definite plans and a burning desire to win." This applies to all forms of "riches"—health, financial freedom, relationships, well-being—not just money. Take time to think about what you truly want. Visualize it, understand your "why," and take daily steps towards it. You then gain control over where—and when—you "quit." New Year's Resolution vs. Goal: A Family Tradition Growing up, my family always celebrated New Year's Eve with a traditional Southern dinner of cabbage, black-eyed peas, and ham – for health, wealth, and happiness, of course! I continued the tradition with my own family, and we added a discussion on resolutions. But more importantly, we focused on setting goals rather than resolutions. We'd gather around the table after our celebratory meal and discuss what we hoped to achieve in the coming year. It wasn't just about making a wish; it was about defining specific desired outcomes and creating actionable plans to get there. This approach has stuck with me throughout my life. I've learned that while a "resolution" might be a strong intention, a goal provides a roadmap. It requires you to envision your ideal future and break it down into concrete steps. Just like my family's annual goal-setting ritual, I've found that surrounding myself with a supportive network – mentors, coaches, and mastermind groups – is crucial. These relationships provide invaluable insights and encouragement, helping me stay on track and overcome obstacles. So, as we embark on a new year, I encourage you to consider your "WHY."
