The Global Patient Alliance for Kidney Health (GloPAKH) participated in a session on "#CVD, connected diagnoses and its effect on the individual and society" during the FOKUS Patient #FutureDays conference, represented by one of our founding members, Kidney Care UK and Fiona Loud, Policy Director.
?
She highlighted that:
?? #ChronicKidneyDisease (CKD) is on the way to becoming the 5th most common NCD driver of mortality globally by 2040;
?? Most #CKD patients are unaware of their condition;
?? Effective treatments are available, like lifestyle changes, medications, and complication management (#diabetes, #CVD, #anemia etc.);
?? Policy makers have an opportunity to prioritize CKD and ensure at-risk people have access to early screening diagnosis;
??Future #CVD national plans around Europe need prioritization of #CKD [Read more at GloPAKH's CKD Screening Policy Brief https://lnkd.in/gd8AHEQ9 ]
?? In the UK, patients are being successfully engaged through the #BloodyAmazingKidneys campaign;
?
Other important points from panellists were:
?? It is essential to draw learnings from Europe's Beating Cancer Plan when implementing national CVD plans in the future;
?? Most #cancer patients will develop #CVD & #CKD complications due to their treatment;
?? Both personalized treatments but also follow-ups are needed;
?? There is still a high inequality among hospitals and not enough engagement in primary care;
?
Wishes for the future:
? Proactively seek to provide care for people with NCDs;
? Political functions like the Ministers of #Economy, #Finance and #Defense, along with national Prime Ministers, and not just Ministries of #Health, need to be engaged in future CVD plans;
? A patient represents a spectrum of different diseases across different times and areas of their life and should be treated multi-disciplinary;
