关于我们
The Global Methane Initiative (GMI) is an international public-private partnership focused on reducing barriers to the recovery and use of methane as a clean energy source. GMI provides technical support to deploy methane-to-energy projects around the world that enable Partner Countries to launch methane recovery and use projects. Through these efforts, GMI is: - Decreasing greenhouse gas emissions - Improving air and water quality - Improving human health - Enhancing energy security - Increasing worker safety - Expanding economic growth GMI advances methane mitigation in three key sectors: Oil and Gas, Biogas, and Coal Mines.

The United States, a founding Partner of GMI, Chair of the Steering Committee, and host of the GMI Secretariat, has pursued a variety of methane mitigation approaches and helped other nations develop robust capacity to address methane issues and opportunities. These efforts include strategic international partnerships, regulatory policy, voluntary outreach programs, project financing, development of numerous assessment tools for feasibility studies and project planning, and collaboration with industry to reduce the negative climate effects of methane emissions and to use technologies to capture methane as a valuable energy source. One of the main obstacles for implementing organic waste management projects is securing financing for capital and operation costs. The GMI Financial Readiness Framework for Organic Waste Management, a new resource developed by the U.S. EPA, addresses this barrier by providing high-level practical guidance to help stakeholders, such as national and subnational government officials, understand the process for financing organic waste management projects that reduce #methane emissions, mitigate potential investment risks, and improve the bankability of projects. Join us for a webinar on Wednesday, 15 January 2025 at 11:00 AM EST (UTC-5) to learn about this new resource and case studies of municipalities overcoming barriers to financing projects that reduce methane emissions from organic waste. During the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) Ministerial at #COP29, governments and philanthropies announced nearly $500 million in new methane abatement grant funding and shared highlights from mobilized funds including support for GMI. For example, with funding from the United States and other partners, GMI conducted more than 25 technical assessments and hosted more than 100 workshops, trainings, consultations, site visits, and meetings, resulting in nearly 3,500 people trained on quantifying and/or reducing methane emissions in 2024. GMI Partner Country, China, hosted the 20th International Symposium on Coal Bed Methane (CBM)/Coal Mine Methane (CMM) in Beijing, China, that included a visit to a mitigation project in Zhengzhou, Henan Province. The event took place December 4-5 and brought together industry experts and stakeholders, including GMI Coal Subcommittee Co-Chairs, to share experiences and solutions to the issues of CBM/CMM development and utilization and to promote global methane emission reduction in the coal sector. UNEP’s International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO recently released a report at #COP29 titled, “An Eye on Methane — Invisible but not unseen,” that takes stock of progress on methane reduction by examining data collected via the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 and from satellites via the Methane Alert and Response System, from its series of global methane science studies, and from national emissions inventories. The report finds that engagement with the systems built to reduce emissions has not kept pace with the pledges to act. However, the tools for data-driven action on methane are available and represent a clear opportunity for governments and companies. To read the full report, visit: https://loom.ly/guIqnKI #CutMethane

The long-standing collaboration on methane mitigation between China and other countries through the Global Methane Initiative was highlighted during a #COP29 side event hosted by Energy Foundation China. One practical example of the collaboration is GMI’s International Coal Mine Methane Project List that colleagues from United States and China recently updated to identify existing mitigation projects in coal mining.
