A Statement from Victor Reyes, MBA, the Chair of GLI’s Board of Directors:? “On behalf of the Global Liver Institute’s Board of Directors, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Larry Holden, previously GLI’s Chief Operating Officer, as the organization’s new President and Chief Executive Officer. 'After a rigorous strategic assessment of our organization and a competitive search process, we are pleased to announce Mr. Holden's new role,' shared Brian Munroe, Chair of the Board’s Succession Committee. Mr. Holden has directly served the global community of liver patients and their families for more than four years with GLI. We eagerly anticipate working with Larry to achieve our strategic goals to scale the deployment and delivery of our awareness, education, policy, and support to an increasing number of communities. Mr. Holden succeeds Founder Donna Cryer, JD, a pioneer in the patient engagement movement and innovator across digital, clinical, and policy arenas. Mrs. Cryer will remain on the board after having launched and shepherded GLI through its first decade of advocacy excellence. Please join us in congratulating Mr. Holden as he steps into his new role.” Read the announcement at: https://lnkd.in/eVwFAi7Y #GlobalLiverDecade #LiverHealth #advocacy #leadership #GLI10 #policy #liverdisease #liverstrong #patientadvocacy #healthcare

?? Advocacy Starts With the Patient ?? Sometimes, as organizations and advocates, we get so caught up in trying to create bigger and better solutions—reinventing the wheel—that we overlook what’s already working. In our pursuit of innovation, we risk losing sight of the one thing that matters most: the person we’re advocating for. Advocacy is not about us. It’s not about our ideas, our achievements, or even our intentions. It’s about finding what truly works for the patient. Listening to their needs, understanding their experiences, and meeting them where they are—that’s where meaningful impact happens. As a community, we need to do better. We need to pause and ask ourselves: Are we centering patients in everything we do? Are we aligning our efforts with what serves them best, or are we chasing our own ambitions? As the Global Liver Institute so powerfully reminds us: “It all starts with a patient.” Let’s take this message to heart and ensure every step we take as advocates is grounded in compassion, collaboration, and the real needs of those we serve. ?? Surgeons at HCG Suchirayu Hospital in #Hubballi have performed their first #livertransplant on a 50-year-old male patient with decompensated #liverdisease caused by Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (#NAFLD), and also living with #hypertension. Once a donor became available, the patient was admitted for transplant surgery. The 10-hour marathon procedure was led by Sandeep Kumbar, Primary Consultant Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist, HCG Suchirayu Hospital, Hubballi, and the surgical team headed by Basant Mahadevappa, HPB and Liver Transplant Surgeon, with support from transplant surgeon Rohit M. and Transplant anesthetist Sunil from HCG Cancer Centre, #Benglauru. The patient was later transferred to the Transplant ICU for recovery and discharged soon after. Dr. Sandeep Kumbar said that the achievement has now positioned Hubballi as the second city in North Karnataka and the fifth in the State to perform a successful liver transplant procedure. Dr. Basant Mahadevappa termed the outcome as a major step forward in organ transplant services in North Karnataka. https://lnkd.in/g6rcVXyM #transplanttuesday #transplantation #organtransplant #liverhealth #liverdisease #raredisease #donatelife

It was a pleasure to be a panelist at BCLC Update 2024 today. Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) at the Hospital Clinic of #Barcelona organized an incredible 2-day #conference. I joined my colleagues, Drs. Jordi Bruix, Joana Ferrer, Marco Sanduzzi, Ernest Belmonte Castán, Sherri Bhoori, Neus Llarch, Grainne O'Kane MB, BCH, BAO, MRCPI, MD, and Maria Reig, and proudly represented the voice of #Patients Associations. The theme of this year's conference is "Forging a Multidisciplinary Ecosystem to Revolutionize #Liver #Cancer Management" and I was able to speak about the importance of #educating patients and #caregivers about the complex #MultidisciplinaryTeam members, #palliativecare and end-of-life needs, cancer related financial toxicity, understanding clinical trial & treatment options. Global Liver Institute is grateful for the partnership and collaboration we share with BCLC!

I have been so blessed in the past week at The Liver Meeting in #SanDiego: to connect with and learn from so many of our patient advocates and physician champions whom I usually only see online; to hear about the cutting-edge research and strategies that will improve #liverhealth in the US and around the world; to share about the exciting mission and impact of Global Liver Institute; to celebrate and re-energize with (many of) my colleagues. ?? Although the conversations happening amongst patients and amongst hepatologists are (and should be) different, powerful cross-talk is happening and improving care. ?? Powerful treatment, prevention, and diagnostic options exist or are incoming for #NASH / #MASH, #viralhepatitis #ACLF, and other liver conditions. Implementing these innovations will require strong health administration and #publichealth efforts. ?? The language we use matters to the experience of stigma, to a patient's understanding of their options, and ultimately to satisfaction and successful care. We must reframe conversations on topics like palliative care or who is at "fault" for the development of disease. ?? Brilliant, funny people are working (and training) in liver health. There's a lot to look forward to. ?? There were friendly faces all over; from undergrad classmates and New Orleans acquaintances to the #advocacy community. So grateful for everyone I had the chance to meet or meet again – I wish I could tag you all! #TLM24 American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD)

Some things I learned at American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD)'s #TLM24 : - Self care is, in itself, healthcare. The mental and emotional wellbeing of liver patients directly relates to their ability to thrive. - Patient nutrition is an essential component in moving the needle towards better healthcare outcomes for liver health patients. - The liver health community is wide and filled with opportunity to make patient's lives better, stronger, and fuller. - The liver health community is stronger when we work together to center the voices of patients and pool our resources. Thank you to the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) for giving my colleagues at Global Liver Institute and myself the opportunity to bolster our patient advocacy skills and strengthen our drive towards healthier patients together. #TLM24 #liverhealth

#DYK? Viral hepatitis is one of the leading causes of liver cancer. Even though it’s preventable and treatable, there are over 2 million new cases each year, threatening health and lives. Get tested and encourage others to do the same this #WorldHepatitisTestingWeek
