Christopher Glass, an expert in international higher education and global student mobility, will be among the speakers at the upcoming AIEA - Association of International Education Administrators Thematic Forum being held at Lehigh University next month. The event, which will be held on April 8 and 9, will explore the powerful role of coaching in advancing intercultural learning and global education. Glass will be the speaker in a session called “Belonging: A Gateway to Global Learning for All Students – Revisited 10 Years Later.” Glass is a Professor of the Practice in the Department of Educational Leadership and Higher Education at Boston College where he leads the Executive Doctor of Education in Higher Education program and serves as an affiliated faculty member in the Center for International Higher Education. “Belonging is not just a feeling we create for others, but a recognition that we belong to each other—it transforms universities from places students merely attend to living communities they actively shape,” Glass said. “ True global learning emerges when we design flexible infrastructures that empower students to become the architects of their own global learning experiences, turning spaces into meaningful places through their creation of them,” he said. Pre-registration for the AIEA Thematic Forum is required. Read more or register at Global Lehigh: https://lnkd.in/eF84dmpq

A Lehigh University senior had the opportunity to spend six weeks in Ireland during the summer of 2024, where she contributed to a groundbreaking research project that uses artificial intelligence to trace how early modern poetry circulated across England and Ireland. Julia Rock-Torcivia ‘25 worked as a research assistant at the University of Galway through the Lehigh in Ireland study abroad program, which has been providing opportunities to students from various disciplines for about 20 years. The innovative research project uses A.I. models originally used in biology to track species movement, and applies them to computationally map and model the circulation of early modern English poetry manuscripts between 1475 and 1700. The goal is to establish the most comprehensive bibliographical dataset on early modern English literary culture ever created. Read more in our Global Lehigh story here: https://lnkd.in/dYm5tzgk

Zena Meighan ‘24 didn’t even have a passport when she first enrolled at Lehigh University. The idea of studying abroad always appealed to her, but coming from a low-income background, she initially believed the idea was out of reach. Today, Meighan is living and working in Kumamoto, a city on the island of Kyushu in Japan, where she works as an assistant teacher providing English language lessons to elementary and middle school-age students. “Without the experiences I had at Lehigh University and the Office of International Affairs, I never would have even thought of doing something like this,” said Meighan, who majored in Asian Studies at Lehigh. “They gave me the opportunities and the confidence to follow this path.” Read more in our Global Lehigh story here: https://lnkd.in/d9-kV3hG

A select group of just over a dozen Lehigh University students had the opportunity to participate in a mentoring session with Richard Verma, an accomplished diplomat who held several prestigious positions under the administrations of U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Last month, Verma was named Lehigh’s inaugural President’s Distinguished Fellow, a six-month appointment during which he will engage with Lehigh students and the broader university community through a variety of activities. During the first of a series of planned meetings mentoring with students on Feb. 27, Verma drew on his extensive experience in government, diplomacy, and international relations. The meetings are to cover such topics as global affairs, Washington’s policy process, leadership and career development, and more. “Lehigh is a great community of alumni, faculty and staff, and it's an institution that invites you to be engaged with that community for many years well beyond your graduation,” Verma said. “It’s been such a reliable part of my life, so it’s great to be able to be here with you and hearing directly from you.” Read more at our Global Lehigh story here: https://lnkd.in/eKuyjs3k
