Today, we celebrate International Day of the Girl by honoring the remarkable girls who are leading, dreaming, and transforming the world. We firmly believe that girls are experts of their own lives—and brilliant feminist activists. So, who best to guide our work than girls themselves? Our Adolescent Girls Advisory Council (AGAC) plays a key role in driving key strategic decisions across our organization including how to redistribute funds and other resources through our Adolescent Girls’ Rights program.? In their countries and regions, they run girl-focused clubs, work with feminist groups and children’s rights organizations, serve as youth advisors, and many more. Around the world, girls are innovating to build a climate- just future, to end period poverty and racial discrimination, and to fight for education for everyone –– and they are winning! Every month, we introduce you to the incredible staff driving Global Fund for Women’s work. This month, say hello to Nafisa Ferdous (she/her), Manager on the Movement-Led Approach team and programmatic lead for our Adolescent Girls portfolio and East Africa Abortion Rights Movement. Nafisa Ferdous is passionate about democratizing power and building meaningful intergenerational collaboration to drive gender justice. ?? #MeetAGlobie “I am a manager in the Movement-Led Approach team and the programmatic lead for our Adolescent Girls portfolio and East Africa Abortion Rights MLA. I also support cross-cutting initiatives like the Artist Changemakers Program, Gender Justice Data Hub, and strategic advisors network. I'm passionate about horizontalism and democratizing power. In my experience, this is rarely a given or easy. and requires labor, unlearning, and a commitment of resources and political will.? I think how we practice power sharing is revealed in an organization's work with young people. Often, when young people are engaged, it’s framed as ‘mentorship’ or having younger faces in higher places. However, meaningful intergenerational collaboration requires an organization to allow itself to be fundamentally transformed by young people's perspectives and priorities, rather than expecting them to assimilate into existing cultures and systems.? I'm very happy that Global Fund for women takes intergenerational power-sharing seriously. I'm excited to think through challenges like gatekeeping, building second-line leadership and the sustainability of movements by seeding to emerging, young feminist or intergenerational groups.??? Outside of work, I am a feminist artist! I make illustrations, prints and practice community-based art. I've been exploring art as labor by becoming involved in the cooperative movement and worker-ownership models. I collaborate with political collectives like Artists for a Radical Imagination (ARI), the Justseeds Cooperative, and WAWOG.”??

For the past year, there has been abhorrent civilian violence and destruction across Gaza, Lebanon, and Israel. In Palestine, grassroots feminist organizations are standing with their communities to save lives and create sustainable futures. ?? “One key factor contributing to the siloed funding model between climate change and reproductive justice is the lack of gender and power analysis to address the effects of the climate crisis. To bridge this gap, we need to recognize that women, girls, and all historically marginalized people are creating and leading solutions to the climate crisis in their local communities and that people do not experience issues in isolation. These solutions have the potential to catalyze transformative change, but they remain under-recognized, undervalued, and under-resourced.” ??? Domestic workers in India face significant challenges including lack of social security, arbitrary pay decisions, and abuse. Most of them make less than $150 a month, and 74% do not have access to medical care.? In Karnataka, the Minimum Wage Act has been in place since 2004, but its implementation has been inconsistent, leading to unequal wage practices.? Geeta Menon, Joint Secretary of the Domestic Workers Union, is a leading advocate for women's rights in India. “Our struggles are to achieve equality, end caste discrimination, and build a safer world for all women and children. The values of equality, fraternity, and justice guide us,” she says.? The future of global gender justice is at stake. Equal Measures 2030's new SDG index reveals that a girl born today will have to wait until her 97th birthday to live in an equal society. ?? Today, nearly 40% of countries are stagnating or regressing on gender equality, putting hard-won gains in women's and girls' rights at risk due to rising anti-feminist rhetoric, political polarization, increasing economic instability, and climate change.?? True equality will only exist when women and girls have full access to their rights—from equal pay and land ownership to sexual and reproductive rights, freedom from violence, access to education, and maternal health rights. ? ? ? https://lnkd.in/daH3Z8gb

The Green Wave movement made history in Mexico when the Supreme Court ruled that criminalizing abortion is unconstitutional –– influencing discussions and policies on sexual and reproductive health across Latin America. ??
