Sustainability through transparency in global fishing activity
关于我们
Global Fishing Watch (GFW) is an international non-profit organisation committed to advancing the sustainability of our oceans through increased transparency. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, our mapping platform provides a powerful tool for ocean governance, empowering anyone to view or download data and investigate global fishing activity in near real-time, for free. GFW was founded in 2015 through a collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth and Google. Our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our funding partners. Our research, data and technology partners are central to achieving our mission to accelerate innovation and deliver actionable insights to increase transparency in commercial fishing and the sustainable management of our oceans.

?? Tracking the shifting vessel identities of the global fishing fleet is critical to increasing transparency and accountability on the high seas. ? Understanding these shifts can help unmask potential links between reflagging and unauthorized activity. ?? By making this information publicly available, flag States and port States are supported in identifying, investigating and clamping down on illegal fishing and other unscrupulous operations that may have gone unchecked without these crucial insights. ?? Did you know? Ship collisions are the leading cause of death worldwide for large whales, but global data on ship strikes are hard to come by — impeding efforts to protect vulnerable species. ?? A new study, led by the University of Washington and published today in Science Magazine, uses our data to better understand the global risk of ship strikes. "At Global Fishing Watch we have a firm commitment to transparency—the act of making information, including ocean and vessel data and their related policies, available and accessible to everyone it affects. Indeed, transparency sits at the core of all we do. And it is why we call on all States to support the establishment of an international vessel tracking agreement—a binding treaty that would require fishing vessels operating outside of their flag State’s waters to be publicly tracked and for that information to be shared beyond just governments." As we mark this year's #WorldFisheriesDay, #GlobalFishingWatch CEO Tony Long calls on governments around the world to take urgent action on vessel tracking to ensure a sustainable and transparent blue future for all. Our expanded collaboration with Planet means getting one step closer to our goal of mapping all human activity at sea. For the good of the ocean, our planet and humankind.
We are thrilled to share that we’ve expanded our work with Global Fishing Watch to enable ocean transparency and accountability. Through our new collaboration, Global Fishing Watch will have access to Planet satellite data to monitor millions of square kilometers of shoreline at 3 m resolution. With this heightened capability, Global Fishing Watch aims to map small vessel activity to support global ocean governance. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g3SuKpGt
