"At Global Fishing Watch we have a firm commitment to transparency—the act of making information, including ocean and vessel data and their related policies, available and accessible to everyone it affects. Indeed, transparency sits at the core of all we do. And it is why we call on all States to support the establishment of an international vessel tracking agreement—a binding treaty that would require fishing vessels operating outside of their flag State’s waters to be publicly tracked and for that information to be shared beyond just governments." As we mark this year's #WorldFisheriesDay, #GlobalFishingWatch CEO Tony Long calls on governments around the world to take urgent action on vessel tracking to ensure a sustainable and transparent blue future for all. Sustainability through transparency in global fishing activity
关于我们
Global Fishing Watch (GFW) is an international non-profit organisation committed to advancing the sustainability of our oceans through increased transparency. By harnessing cutting-edge technology, our mapping platform provides a powerful tool for ocean governance, empowering anyone to view or download data and investigate global fishing activity in near real-time, for free. GFW was founded in 2015 through a collaboration between Oceana, SkyTruth and Google. Our work is made possible thanks to the generous support of our funding partners. Our research, data and technology partners are central to achieving our mission to accelerate innovation and deliver actionable insights to increase transparency in commercial fishing and the sustainable management of our oceans.

Our expanded collaboration with Planet means getting one step closer to our goal of mapping all human activity at sea. For the good of the ocean, our planet and humankind.
We are thrilled to share that we’ve expanded our work with Global Fishing Watch to enable ocean transparency and accountability. Through our new collaboration, Global Fishing Watch will have access to Planet satellite data to monitor millions of square kilometers of shoreline at 3 m resolution. With this heightened capability, Global Fishing Watch aims to map small vessel activity to support global ocean governance. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/g3SuKpGt

?? An unprecedented study, led by Global Fishing Watch and published in Nature earlier this year, revealed extensive insights about the growing footprint of human activity at sea. ??? By illuminating the unseen, we are able to shed light on some of the most economically important human activities at sea - including global fishing activity and interactions between offshore infrastructure and global vessels. ?? Check out the key findings in this striking visual recap. bit.ly/3RdKfpH

Global decision makers are seeking new ways to identify emission trends and pinpoint high-impact opportunities to tackle climate change. However, among all the information leveraged by climate actors in their quest to accelerate climate action, critical ocean data has long been an elusive component - until now. "The open seas have historically been the least monitored part of our planet. Now, drawing on satellites and machine learning, we can estimate all the greenhouse gas emissions from almost all human activity in the ocean," said David Kroodsma, Chief Scientist at #GlobalFishingWatch. #GlobalFishingWatch is proud to have its unique data sets mapping and estimating the emissions of all ocean-faring industrial vessels included in Climate TRACE's new data release, presented today at #COP29 alongside Fmr. United States Vice President Al Gore. "We are excited to help Climate TRACE track these greenhouse gas emissions that have previously been unaccounted for," David Kroodsma added. WATCH Fmr. US Vice President Al Gore and Climate TRACE present key new data revealing high-impact opportunities for cutting greenhouse gas emissions at their #COP29 event. ?? https://lnkd.in/gHTC_RrA cc: UN Climate Change

?? Vessel Viewer is supporting global efforts to address #IllegalFishing through transparency. ??? Developed in partnership with Trygg Mat Tracking, this innovative vessel history tool uses satellite data to provide detailed insights on a vessel’s identity, fishing activity, port visits and authorizations. ?? Users can now harness its powerful features to generate automated vessel group reports and analysis, identify vessels with the greatest fishing activity or encounters and easily set-up vessel groups based on their portfolio of interest-adding up to 1000 vessels to a vessel group at a time. ?? Human activity at sea has significantly altered our global marine environments. ?? Reckless exploitation of the ocean has resulted in a third of the world’s major commercial fish stocks being overfished—upsetting the natural balance of marine ecosystems everywhere. ??? With biological diversity declining at alarming rates, governments and wider stakeholders are leveraging our unique map and tools to ramp up protections for ocean habitats, help safeguard some of the most spectacular marine reserves across the planet and address concerns from the fishing industry with transparent and accessible data. ??
