Global Entomology Coalition

休耕保育组织

We open the pathway for collaboration across borders for progress in entomological research and conservation.

关于我们

We are a collaborative network comprising entomologists (amateur and professional), researchers, educators, artists, philanthropists, policymakers, and enthusiasts from around the world. The GEC serves as a unified platform for fostering cooperation, sharing knowledge, and driving progress in the field of entomology. At the core of the GEC’s objectives is the promotion of research that addresses critical issues related to insect biodiversity, ecology, behavior, and physiology. By facilitating communication and collaboration among experts across various disciplines, the coalition aims to accelerate scientific discoveries and develop effective strategies for insect conservation and discovery. The coalition actively engages with governments, non-governmental organizations, industries, and local communities to advocate for evidence-based policies and practices that support insect conservation efforts and change the global attitudes toward insects to help turn their negative reputation around. It all starts with education and outreach. We provide resources, training programs, educational initiatives, and open research expeditions to the public to inspire and foster appreciation for the incredibly important behaviors, adaptations, and environmental roles insects play in maintaining global ecological balance.

  • Here's a sneak peek at the incredible wildlife and research happening at Expedition Entomology partner station, Cocobolo Nature Reserve, and the dedicated people behind the scenes. The potential for discovery at this unique and critically important reserve is off the charts! Huge thank you to Michael Roy - founder of CREA Panama and Cocobolo for hosting us and creating this amazing reserve, Lucy & Trevor for taking the time to show us a day in the life of an arboreal mammal research team, and Pablo Valero for joining us and sharing his expertise and discovery of undescribed stick insects! All incredibly passionate and fun people to spend a week with! Join us next when we go back for some deeper insect research next year! Or, if you're a researcher, contact to Cocobolo Nature Reserve to kickstart your own project in this biodiversity hotspot. https://lnkd.in/ezQbvxPv https://lnkd.in/evDHrzJn #Biodiversity #ResearchOpportunities #Entomology #WildlifeConservation #climateaction #environmentalresearch

  • Our first expedition to Cocobolo Nature Reserve in Panama ( CREA Panama) was not only extremely fun, but productive as well. In the short time we were there, we documented hundreds of species of insects, only scratching the surface of the vast biodiversity of this unique migratory habitat. Thanks to Phasmid expert Pablo Valero, 6 confirmed new species of stick insect were found - 2 of which are new genera! - with at least 4 others (likely more) awaiting confirmation. And we had a first record in Central America for a mantid previously only known in South America. We can't wait to get back next year! All are welcome to join us, regardless of academic background - so keep an eye out to learn how you can come along next time! https://lnkd.in/dHUsspGj In the meantime, please consider supporting our work and the work of CREA Panama - they are doing some incredible research behind the scenes to protect one of the most critical migratory habitats in the Americas.

Apply today or share this with someone you know who might be interested! Let’s make a REAL difference together!

  • "What good are mosquitoes?" - This is one of the most common questions we hear at our programs and lectures. We have plenty of answers to that, but I want to thank Eric Eaton for this fascinating article highlighting a beautiful species of mosquito that we think anyone could label as "good" (from an anthropocentric viewpoint). However, we agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment in this article, believing it's important to move away from labeling insects as simply 'good' or 'bad'.

  • We're excited to be part of #Entomology2024, the annual meeting of the Entomological Society of America in Phoenix from November 10-13th. Visit our booth for some great conversation, fun photo ops and learn more about some of our exciting upcoming projects that you can get involved in! We’ll also be giving a presentation on November 11th at 1pm about our Expedition Entomology program - an opportunity for adventurous participants to gain hands-on research experience, regardless of academic experience or affiliation. Our next expedition is to the critical migratory rainforests of Panama from January 24th to February 1st. If you're interested in learning more about that, visit our website, say hi to us in Phoenix, or reach out to us directly. Let us know if you'll be attending, or would like to connect at the conference. We look forward to meeting all of you passionate entomology enthusiasts! #Entomology2024 #ExpeditionEntomology #InsectResearch #Panama #Entomology #Research

  • Just look at these faces! I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has given us—and the insects—a chance to share our stories and change your minds over the years. The wild world appreciates your kindness, curiosity, and willingness to adapt your philosophies and embrace new ideas. Your reactions are what make our work as educators truly meaningful. Whether it's a "yuck" turning into a "wow," fear transforming into curiosity, or caution giving way to laughter, these moments are what we live for. Insects are one of those creatures you have to experience firsthand, without the filter of a "pest or not" or "what does it do for me?". If you've always thought insects were "gross," "scary," or simply "pests," we invite you to join one of our programs. Call us, email us, text us your questions and curiosities. We don't just hope that exposure and education will change your mind—we see it happen every time we share our love for these incredible animals. Those who start off scared or grossed-out are often the ones who spend the most time with our insects, and almost always leave with a new perspective. People tell us that they no longer squash caterpillars eating their tomatoes; instead, they gently move them to another plant. The spiders in their homes are no longer eliminated, but rehomed. The wasps in their sheds aren’t sprayed—they’re respected and left to do their work as they will extend the same courtesy to you. My two favorite phrases to say are "I don't know" and "I was wrong" - because life is a non-stop educational journey and we're all learning together. This ability to change our minds when presented with new information - our adaptability - is truly a human's best quality and should be embraced and celebrated. If you have any stories of how your perspective on insects and spiders has changed - please comment and let us know!

  • Conducting a BioBlitz is an incredibly fun way to engage the public in science and share the fascinating stories hidden within every habitat. This weekend, we wrapped up BioBlitz 2024 at The World Fellowship Center in Albany, New Hampshire, USA. A huge thank you to everyone who participated—your enthusiasm and insightful questions made this event truly special! A big thanks to our amazing team of naturalists: - Larry Millman, adventure travel writer and mycologist. - Jef Taylor, Secretary of the New England Entomological Society and skilled general naturalist. - Dr. Diana Jolles, Assistant Professor of Plant Biology and evolutionary botanist. - Mycologist Dr. Thomas Stoughton of Mad Professors Mushrooms. We gained so much from their diverse expertise and, along with our founder, Jace Porter, who provided the entomological guidance, we were able to experience and share the intricate network of connections between every organism in a given ecosystem. It was a blast collaborating with all of you! In just about 6 hours of exploring a few trails (representing a small fraction of the property), we identified over 250 species of plants, fungi, insects, spiders, birds, and more. And that’s just the on-site identifications—we still have plenty of work ahead to finalize our findings! It's hard not to have fun when you're discovering the biodiversity of such a beautiful array of northern new england habitats at a single property though, and the World Fellowship Center were fantastic and caring hosts, not to mention awesome cooks using their on-site garden. Oh, and the dance party afterwards was stellar - I didn't realize so many naturalists can also bust a move! After a quick swim in the pond, it was time to say goodbye, but we'll be back to Bioblitz again real soon! We'll have our own BioBlitz days during our Expedition Entomology program, so if you want to join us abroad, check our availability at https://lnkd.in/ezQbvxPv
