Global Development Lab (GDL) is a UCLA student-run organization that endeavors to create a community of individuals with a passion for international development and establish a space for students to learn, experience, and engage in community development projects critical to the alleviation of global poverty. Our vision is that students gain the skills necessary to experiment with initiatives of their own, while at the same time gaining an understanding of “development†that is sustainable, culturally-relevant, and in alignment with the goals and needs of their community partners.

WEEK 8: GDL's Lab Cohort began our #EnvironmentalSustainabilityJusticeandEquity Unit with a presentation by Executive Director Hansika Nath discussing three key topics in ESG & Sustainability; Carbon Taxes, Critical Minerals, and Financial Disclosures. Lab Cohort members then applied their knowledge to real world Case Studies on all three key topics bolstering problem solving, critical thinking and strategic communication skills.

WEEK 7 COLLAB: Global Development Lab UCLA hosted talented UCLA Mock Trial members and alum; Nasier Muldrow, Riley Shapiro, Ashley Jahed, Alexandra Chala who presented a shortened trial based on their current mock trial case! Following the mock trial exhibition, UCLA Mock Trial representatives opened a Q&A for GDL cohort on trial advocacy, LSAT, law school, and more! Huge shoutout to Director of Career Resources and UCLA Mock Trial Alum Dami Salami for organizing this partnership!

WEEK 5: GDL was overjoyed to welcome back our long-term partners at NEI Nutrition and Education International! President and CEO at Nutrition and Education International Steven Kwon and David Park came to speak on the enormous impact that NEI has had upon diminishing malnutrition in Afghanistan and stimulating the now-booming soybean industry. We are looking forward to partnering with NEI for an upcoming internships offered exclusively for GDL members, so stay tuned for application decisions!

WEEK 4: On Tuesday, January 28th the GDL Cohort was fortunate enough to host Assistant Professor of Sociology Kevan Harris, who shared his valuable insights on "Development Careers and Post-Grad". Professor Harris' panel provided guidance on breaking into the development sphere, his experience with academia and advice on navigating graduate school. WEEK 2&3: During the unprecedented early weeks of this quarter, the 2024-2025 UCLA GDL cohort expanded on their understanding of international development consulting, and applied their knowledge to REAL LIFE development projects. Developed by Professor Michael Lofchie, GDL members were able to apply the critical thinking which GDL stimulates in order to create and present their development consulting scenarios to the entirety of the Lab! Thank you to Hansika Nath for taking over the presentation of these activities in these challenging times for all of Los Angeles!

WEEK 1: On Tuesday, January 6th, UCLA Global Development Lab was fortunate enough to hear from Jeffrey Janis, UCLA's Peace Corps Representative on his experience in the Peace Corps Ukraine! Jeffrey Janis spoke on his experience navigating a new country and a new culture, as well as discovering how to actualize his experiences and strengths into projects within his community. UCLA Global Development Lab is accepting applications for it's 2024-2025 Fall Cohort! GDL seeks to foster future generations of innovators passionate about poverty, development and globalization, enabling students to approach a variety of global and domestic issues through a critical lens. Our International Institute-affiliated organization aims to translate theoretical applications into practical solutions. Global Development Lab graduate from our program equipped with tangible skills through expert-led workshops, internship placements, research projects, and development model experimentation.
