On October 17, the U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security released a “China Threat Snapshot” assessment, enumerating “recent cases of Chinese Communist Party (CCP)-related espionage and acts of transnational repression in the United States.” The 10-page documents (available in full below) lists more than 55 espionage cases since 2021, more than 200 incidents of Chinese espionage against the United States since 2000, and more than 36,000 apprehensions of Chinese nationals at the southwest border in 2024, more than all the apprehensions from 2007 to 2020 combined... https://lnkd.in/dzMQ24in

Posted on The Guardian website by George Chidi on 6/19/2024 Georgia is the first state to mandate training in election law in order for police to become state certified, a reflection of lessons learned in the aftermath of the state’s 2020 race. The new requirement for police trainees to take a one-hour course on election laws is meant to keep officers from trying to guess at how to enforce the law on election day, said Chris Harvey, deputy executive director for the Georgia peace officer standards and training council. https://lnkd.in/e6PbiMV7

However, despite their widespread adoption, there remains a surprising gap in their utilization within entry-level and in-service training programs. Session Abstract: Surveillance is often portrayed as a double-edged sword ensuring safety against crimes and violent extremism on one day, yet, exploited to commit devastating attacks on the other. When compromised, surveillance tools become a leak source of sensitive information, which if misused, can cause serious damage. Not to forget the psychological consequences portrayed as “change” in human behaviour caused by surveillance that seem inevitable. Nevertheless, there appears to be scarce research investigating the aspects of resistance and counterstrategies to law enforcement agencies surveillance and AI use, particularly on online platforms. Yasmine’s ongoing research is design to fill this knowledge gap. The Symposium will also include several important updates from the Global Consortium Leadership about upcoming events, ways to get involved, and of course a round-table discussion for academy directors to discuss topics of relevance to police training and education.
