It is an absolute pleasure to be in Nice, for the Transfrigoroute International annual general meeting and conference, representing Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) Congratulations to the team at Transfrigoroute France for such a well planned and thought leading agenda Opening with a mind expanding discussion on the role of cold chain transportation in the world and the disruptive opportunities of AI, we have been able to take a deep dive into the major innovations and regulatory developments in refrigerated equipment and labour challenges shared across Europe. I also appreciate the chance to catch up with ECSLA European Cold Storage and Logistics Association colleagues Christine Weiker Davey Gerlings Marcos Badenes Noel THIEFINE and Jan Peilnsteiner Also a vital opportunity to say a bittersweet farewell to European cold chain legend Valerie Lasserre who starts her well earned retirement next week - I was pleased to be present at a fitting and heartfelt tribute from all her members and friends - thanks for all you have done Valerie!

Global Cold Chain Foundation | Food Waste Focus | Climate Week 2024??? ? Tackling food poverty in South Africa. During the 2024 Africa Cold Chain Conference, GCCF, spoke with Khamil Hiraman, National Operations Manager of FoodForward SA. Food Forward is a non-profit organization that recovers surplus food in the supply chain and redistributes it to those in need within the country and is a member of the Global Cold Chain Alliance. Khamil explains the impact that COVID-19 had on the organization and how it grew rapidly to meet the demands of those in need. Within three months, they expanded to all nine providences in South Africa. They also discuss how 3PL businesses can help to support Food Foward and other similar non-profits as part of the Global Cold Chain Foundation’s Food Waste Reduction Intiative.? I was pleased to talk to Marina Mayer, Food Logistics as part of this months cover feature on the outlook for cold chain transportation. The article is well worth a read - key messages: ? the overall picture is one of long term growth, but with significant demand fluctuations to navigate (when it has ever not been so!) ?compliance and equipment costs remain the biggest risks for business to manage - including the regulatory pressure to decarbonise ? some evidence of greater 'nearshoring' of trade flows because of geopolitical and global logistics disruptions My conclusion "we don’t expect dramatic change in the balance between local, regional and global food trade flows. It is also vital to remember that security and resilience come from having access to food from a range of suppliers and locations both locally and across the world." Global Cold Chain Foundation | Food Waste Focus | Climate Week 2024 This month, we wanted to highlight a GCCA member who is driving change in the Food Waste Reduction initiative. This article was a part of the May-June COLD FACTS Magazine and details Congebec Inc. mission to drive change in food loss and waste within the cold supply chain with their food waste program. Their program consists of a three-step strategy: donating storage space, recruiting customer support, and providing mentorship. With the success of their partnership with Food Banks of Quebec so far, Congebec has ambitions to launch a partnership with Food Banks Canada and team up with customers to offer them a fast track alternative to destroying products.
