At GCOA member TIAA Institute’s Fellows Symposium “Framing the future of higher education,” speakers highlighted the changes higher education institutions can and must make to adapt to a changing world – including population aging. Surya Kolluri, Head of TIAA Institute and James Appleby, CEO of Gerontological Society of America (GSA), discussed the importance of age inclusivity in higher education – ensuring that all ages are welcome on college and university campuses. These changes help to broaden the pool of students for universities, provide upskilling opportunities for mid-career students, and also help prepare students of all ages for the multigenerational workforce that awaits when they leave school. Other speakers also covered the potential of AI to help increase availability of asynchronous learning which is particularly important for mature students, and the importance of caregiving benefits for employers and employees – as covered by TIAA and GCOA’s report on tailored benefits for employees across the life course (https://lnkd.in/eYunzeTv). Check out TIAA Institute’s website for more resources on how higher ed is adapting to the global demographic shift. #TIAAInstFellows #HigherEd

We are proud to be taking part in a significant event today, hosted by the Global Coalition on Aging and Acton Institute, and held at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, Vatican City. The symposium, ‘Solving for Antimicrobial Resistance: A Rising Global Health and Humanitarian Crisis’, aims to highlight the urgent need to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) on a global scale, with particular focus on those most at risk in this growing global health threat. SHIONOGI Director and Vice Chair of the Board, Takuko Sawada, will highlight how we continue to work on the frontline of tackling AMR to protect the world’s most vulnerable. Drawing on our scientific expertise and working in partnership with organisations like the Global Antibiotic R&D Partnership (GARDP) and Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (CHAI), we want to support equitable access to essential antibiotics for those most in need. As the G7 prepares to transfer presidency from Italy to Canada later in the year, this symposium will focus on the continuing urgent challenge of AMR, the current state of progress on AMR countermeasures around the G7 and EU, and debate the problem of AMR from health, policy, and moral perspectives. #AMR #AntimicrobialResistance #GlobalHealth #GARDP #CHAI #LMICs #GCOA #RoadFromPuglia

This week, Global Coalition on Aging and the Acton Institute brought together senior clergy, scientists, patient advocates and private sector representatives at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Vatican City to discuss the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the need for innovative health products that can diagnose, prevent, and treat drug-resistant diseases. At our November 12 symposium, “Solving for Antimicrobial Resistance: A Rising Global Health and Humanitarian Crisis,” participants debated the steps needed to solve the #AMR crisis. Antimicrobials are foundational to modern medicine; they have revolutionized human health, extending the promises of healthy longevity across the world. AMR poses a grave threat to humanity. As the medicines we use to heal fatal infections become ineffective against disease-causing microbes, we find ourselves living in a world of increasing health disparities. For millions of people, routine medical treatments are becoming increasingly unsafe, undermining efforts to expand longevity for all. Problems like sepsis caused by community and hospital-acquired infections are growing increasingly threatening. As AMR worsens, we are on the threshold of returning to a world without antimicrobials. It is therefore important that hospitable policy and financing conditions are created to support the development of these innovations. The G7 has committed to implementing a coordinated set of push incentives to fund R&D and pull incentives to procure antimicrobials regardless of sales volume, thereby ensuring a sustainable supply of new, innovative medicines for everyone without encouraging overuse. These solutions are crucial to ensuring that we have new antimicrobials that can treat infections even if existing treatments fail.
