Happy Rare Disease Day! My personal 4th one. My son was born with CDH (Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia) and 2 heart defects as a bonus to that. It was a long hard journey from pic one to pic two, but modern medicine, research and dedicated experienced doctors can do almost miracles ?? How to deal with a rare disease? My personal tips are: Never give up, believe in the best possible outcome, trust the professionals and spread the awareness - it is so important for all patients to feel that they are not alone, that there are more people in the same situation, that they can share experience, tips and also pains and frustrations... For me CDH International - the World's Oldest. Largest, and Leading Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia Charity was the group who helped me to connect with the mums in the same situation, who shared our story, prayed when it was the hardest. As a person working in clinical research, I had it easier - I knew where to get all information, articles, literature. "Regular" people do not have this option. So please, support the patients with all information they need, help them to find a patient organisation, which is dealing with their disease. A rare disease is a condition that affects a small percentage of the population, typically defined as fewer than 1 in 2,000 people. These diseases are often chronic, progressive, and can be debilitating. Due to their rarity, they may not receive as much attention or research funding as more common conditions, which can make diagnosis, treatment, and support more challenging for patients and their families. There are thousands of different rare diseases, and many are genetic in nature. While individually rare, collectively, they affect a significant number of people worldwide.
