The U.S. government has recently signaled* they will more closely scrutinize and report on “non-essential” business travel and related spending for federal employees. It is essential to remember and acknowledge the tremendous and tangible value of traveling for work. For any entity – whether government or private sector – when business travel is being scrutinized, it is short-sighted to think of travel solely in terms of cost. While organizations, businesses and their employees are the first to benefit from business travel, states and cities throughout the United States also benefit greatly from the economics of work travel. Our GBTA research** shows that for every $1 spent on business travel in the US, $1.15 is generated in economic value to the communities, airports and venues where those meetings and conferences are being held. In the U.S., business travel represents 2% of U.S. GDP, over $421 billion in expenditures, and supports 6 million jobs. Business travel is at its best when we make every trip count, ensuring value from every dollar spent. Using technology, we’re making travel more efficient and productive. And getting out and meeting with people is critical — because that's how we thrive in our interconnected economy. If we're serious about training smart employees, building connections, securing deals, and creating value for industries and organizations, we must facilitate and encourage purposeful business travel. We urge the United States to keep traveling because it is a force for good throughout the country and beyond.
