When former El Dorado County judge Dylan Sullivan was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia (PPA), a rare form of dementia, she faced the heartbreaking reality of losing her ability to communicate. But something remarkable happened—her brain rewired, unlocking an unexpected gift for art. Dylan’s journey highlights the resilience of the brain, the interplay between neurodegenerative disease and creativity, and the importance of supporting individuals navigating dementia. At the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) and UCSF Memory and Aging Center, we continue to explore how the brain adapts and the possibilities that emerge even in the face of challenges. Could cultivating openness promote brain health? Openness is a core value of the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI)—a defining quality of effective leaders, a pathway to deeper connection, and a trait with profound neurobiological roots. Kudos to Atlantic Fellows Aaron Colverson, Pablo Alexander Reyes Gavilan, Sonia Leonor Sánchez Mendoza, and special guest Boon Lead Tee for leading a thought-provoking salon on Openness at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center. Through engaging discussions and sensory experiences, participants explored how openness influences leadership, community, and brain health. How do you cultivate openness in your life and work? Let’s continue this conversation. ???? #AtlanticFellows #Openness #Leadership #BrainHealth

?? Can your sleep patterns predict Alzheimer’s risk? New research co-authored by Atlantic Fellow Yue Leng suggests that delayed REM sleep may be an early warning sign of Alzheimer’s disease. REM sleep is critical for memory consolidation and emotional regulation, and disruptions may accelerate disease progression. The study found that individuals with delayed REM sleep had higher levels of amyloid and tau, proteins associated with Alzheimer’s. This work highlights the importance of healthy sleep habits and further research on medications that influence sleep patterns.
