Other values, such as human freedoms—freedom of thought (autonomy) and freedom of action (agency)—are equally, if not more, important. Trust, consent, and ethics also deserve equal footing. Unfortunately, many companies treat ethics as an afterthought, something tacked on later, rather than embedding it into the design and operation of their technologies from the start. In my book, I emphasize that true progress comes from balancing innovation with these essential human values. For example, in Carla’s 2032 world, her personal AI agent, Corey, represents a model of ethical innovation. Technologies like Corey require significant technical advancements—such as interoperability, where different AI systems can communicate seamlessly.
