Glenmeadow extends a heartfelt thank you to board member and friend, Brooks Fitch, for his compelling lecture on his father, Harrison "Honey" Fitch—a true UConn legend and trailblazer. As the first African American UConn basketball player in the 1930s, Harrison Fitch broke barriers, sparked change, and paved the way for future generations. Our residents and staff were honored to take part in this inspiring discussion, engaging in meaningful conversations about perseverance, leadership, and the power of history. Brooks has carried his father’s legacy forward by establishing the Harrison Fitch Leadership Fund, supporting students who exemplify leadership and resilience. Glenmeadow was honored to welcome Cynthia Melcher, President of the Zonta Club of Quaboag Valley and Executive Director of the World Affairs Council of Western Massachusetts, as our Woman's History Month presenter. Cynthia provided a highly informative presentation on Zonta International's initiatives to empower women and girls through advocacy and service. Zonta International focuses on promoting equality, equity, education, and ending gender-based violence. This prominent organization supports women and girls worldwide through service, grants, and fundraising. Glenmeadow was honored to receive Shannon M. Rudder, MBA President and CEO of Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services, who provided a captivating presentation on the origins and significance of Black History Month, the enduring influence of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, and the meaningful work accomplished by MLK Family Services. MLK Family Services implements a variety of programs designed to support youth, young adults, families, and seniors, including after-school initiatives, the HBCU experience for high schoolers, sports leagues, and a food pantry, resulting in a profound and lasting impact on the greater Springfield community. The Be Love initiative motivates us to embody the principles advocated by Dr. King, prompting us to reflect on how we can demonstrate love, compassion, and support within our community, foster unity, and encourage cooperation amongst our neighbors. We are grateful to Shannon M. Rudder, MBA, Claudia Pazmany, and the team at Martin Luther King Family Services for their impactful efforts in Western Mass and for sharing their insights with our residents.
