Real end-to-end testing requires real-world transactions. Sometimes that’s not too difficult to do if you are implementing payments in your own country. But step outside your border, and it gets a bit harder. People new to payments turn to logical solutions when faced with this problem. Can you call the acquirer? Won’t they have test accounts for us to use? (Probably not.) Can’t we just drip a few transactions through with a few live customers to see how it goes? (Sure, but you may wait a long time to run through all the scenarios you would like to see - and there usually isn’t patience for that in a launch environment.) It’s tough, but don’t be discouraged. Mercifully, a subspeciality of payment providers has set out to solve this problem. And that is the focus of this episode. I spent my time at Money2020 focused primarily on merchant payment optimization. Here are my major takeaways: ???????????????? ???? ???????????? ???????? ?????????????? / ???????? ?????????? ?????????????? ?????????????????? ???? ???????????????? - If you are a PSP, and you aren't establishing relationships with major banks to either share enhanced data/risk score or to influence the other major banks to get on board, you are behind the times. - Companies want to solve this problem for the long tail of banks in the U.S. - this may leverage an “open banking” connection to provide transparency into balances that could help resolve NSF declines, but ultimately could be a conduit for data sharing that helps solve “Suspected Fraud” and similar declines in the future. - Capital One is the only bank publicly making direct connections to their fraud risk engines available for enhanced data sharing (outside of Amex and Discover), but other major banks are considering it, and I would expect to see some additional banks following suit - the sooner the better! ?????????????? ????/????, ??????????????????, ?????? ?????? ????????/ ???? ???????? ???? ?? ?????????? ???????????????????? ?????? ????????-?????????????????? ?????????????????? - The size and sophistication of a Payments Team across the great merchant community varies significantly, and is not always correlated with the volume of payments a business generates. Many merchants want to “do more with less”, and the more automated solution providers can make “operating payments” easier, the more value lies in the solution from a cost savings and revenue maximization perspective. - The businesses that are well-suited to offer these services are: orchestration platforms, billing engines, payments data analytics platforms, and payment service providers - This idea alone is not groundbreaking, but the fervor with which various entities are pursuing this evolution of their services is noticeable. ???????????? ???????????????? ???????????? ?????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???? ???????????????? ???????? ???????????????????????? - There are several options in the market for recurring merchants that need help recapturing failed payments, but the choices for non-subscription merchants require a more hands-on optimization approach that some merchants don’t have the knowledge or resources to develop. - FlexFactor is an interesting company that can support both Customer Initiated and Merchant Initiated transactions. From their website: “We do not provide a “risk score” or a recommendation. We settle the purchases that we accept to merchants via our service and then manage the customer’s repayment separately. And if we do not get paid by the customer, we bear the full loss.” - Kipp - Authorize More is a company primarily focused on solving NSF declines by connecting directly with card issuer decision engines to make optimal decisions on authorizations and involving the merchant in the decision
