Imagine this: You are in a room full of people you don't know. All of a sudden, someone gets up on stage and proceeds to tell everyone a story – YOUR story. And not just any story — it's the story of the worst thing you've ever experienced in your life. Sounds pretty terrible, huh? For years, nonprofits have been told that a heartbreaking story is what gets donors to open their checkbooks. But when we worry more about a story's impact on the people hearing it than we do about the person who lived it, we do real harm, robbing people of their agency, perpetuating systems of exploitation, and even retraumatizing the very people we're trying to support. Ethical Storytelling is a paradigm shift in the way we collect and share stories. It's a practice built on trust and transparency; it honors and centers the storyteller's dignity, voice, and ownership of their story; it's about telling stories with people, not about them. Now, non-profits have a powerful new resource to help them understand and implement Ethical Storytelling strategies. The 2024 Ethical Storytelling Report was produced by our friends at MemoryFox, and includes input from 30+ contributors, including Gladiator Founder Rachel D'Souza. This *free* report explores the state of ethical storytelling and offers keen insights, tips from experts, and real-life case studies. • How do you tackle a #polycrisis? Some thoughts from Gladiator founder Rachel D'Souza:

    查看Rachel D'Souza的档案

    Founder/CCF Movement Builder/Writer/Advocate

It's time to name that the nonprofit sector in the US is facing a #polycrisis. Attributed to French sociologist Edgar Morin, polycrisis describes a complex situation where multiple, interconnected?crises?converge and amplify each other, resulting in a?predicament?which is difficult to manage or resolve. Unlike single crises which may have clear causes and solutions, a polycrisis involves overlapping and interdependent issues. For decades, the culture in our sector - more often than not - perpetuates and overvalues concepts like scarcity, linear solutions, either/or scenarios, wealth inequality, harm reduction over systems change, perfectionism, sense of urgency and progress is more/bigger. The data is telling us that trust in our work continues to decline along with our numbers of donors and volunteers. The statewide and federal policies and law that govern our work are in a continued state of flux. And now, a variety of federal legislation seeks to infringe on our free speech and advocacy. So if you are feeling ill-equipped to manage/handle/lead in this current chapter of your work, I SEE YOU and confirm what your gut might be telling you - that the individuals and institutions that make up our sector may not possess an understanding of what practices, tools and relationships are needed to meet and move through this polycrisis. We have much work to do to reimagine our path forward while bringing our communities of volunteers, donors, marginalized voices, and beneficiaries along. Embracing the values and principles of the #CommunityCentricFundraising is a useful entry point for testing change in your work or organization. CCF isn't a framework or transactional practice - it is a movement that calls us to shed what isn't serving us, to lean hard into unlikely community and to reimagine how we steward the resources vital to a thriving social sector. The CCF movement is one community of resources we can use to meet this moment. But it requires us to give up the culture we are comfortable with and accustom to- which is really, REALLY hard to do alone. Luckily, our sector roots itself in generosity and #philanthropy - the love of humankind. If this resonates with you, consider this 1) an invitation to connect with me and the Gladiator Consulting team about #ChangeManagement and #ScenarioPlanning and 2)some encouragement to email/text/call that individual or organization whose facing the same worrisome reality you are and make a plan to meet! We will move through this #polycrisis TOGETHER.

  • ??ACTION ALERT?? Urge your Members of Congress to vote NO on H.R. 9495! Please help stop the House of Representatives from their latest attempt to sneak in a power grab for the incoming Trump Administration. H.R. 9495 would give unprecedented authority to the Executive Branch to strip nonprofits of their tax exempt status, without transparency or due process. It is ALREADY illegal to provide material support to foreign terrorism – but under this bill, the Administration could label ANY nonprofit as a "terrorist supporting organization" – without sharing their evidence, and providing only 90 days for the accused to clear their name. Most at risk: Law-abiding organizations providing humanitarian assistance in conflict zones. ??MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD?? 1) Read the attached joint statement from the Council on Foundations, the Independent Sector, the National Council of Nonprofits, and the United Philanthropy Forum to learn more. 2) Call your representative today and ask them to vote NO on H.R. 9495!
