How do you tackle a #polycrisis? Some thoughts from Gladiator founder Rachel D'Souza:

    查看Rachel D'Souza的档案,图片

    Founder/CCF Movement Builder/Writer/Advocate

It's time to name that the nonprofit sector in the US is facing a #polycrisis. Attributed to French sociologist Edgar Morin, polycrisis describes a complex situation where multiple, interconnected?crises?converge and amplify each other, resulting in a?predicament?which is difficult to manage or resolve. Unlike single crises which may have clear causes and solutions, a polycrisis involves overlapping and interdependent issues. For decades, the culture in our sector - more often than not - perpetuates and overvalues concepts like scarcity, linear solutions, either/or scenarios, wealth inequality, harm reduction over systems change, perfectionism, sense of urgency and progress is more/bigger. The data is telling us that trust in our work continues to decline along with our numbers of donors and volunteers. The statewide and federal policies and law that govern our work are in a continued state of flux. And now, a variety of federal legislation seeks to infringe on our free speech and advocacy. So if you are feeling ill-equipped to manage/handle/lead in this current chapter of your work, I SEE YOU and confirm what your gut might be telling you - that the individuals and institutions that make up our sector may not possess an understanding of what practices, tools and relationships are needed to meet and move through this polycrisis. We have much work to do to reimagine our path forward while bringing our communities of volunteers, donors, marginalized voices, and beneficiaries along. Embracing the values and principles of the #CommunityCentricFundraising is a useful entry point for testing change in your work or organization. CCF isn't a framework or transactional practice - it is a movement that calls us to shed what isn't serving us, to lean hard into unlikely community and to reimagine how we steward the resources vital to a thriving social sector. The CCF movement is one community of resources we can use to meet this moment. But it requires us to give up the culture we are comfortable with and accustom to- which is really, REALLY hard to do alone. Luckily, our sector roots itself in generosity and #philanthropy - the love of humankind. If this resonates with you, consider this 1) an invitation to connect with me and the Gladiator Consulting team about #ChangeManagement and #ScenarioPlanning and 2)some encouragement to email/text/call that individual or organization whose facing the same worrisome reality you are and make a plan to meet! We will move through this #polycrisis TOGETHER.

??ACTION ALERT?? Urge your Members of Congress to vote NO on H.R. 9495! Please help stop the House of Representatives from their latest attempt to sneak in a power grab for the incoming Trump Administration. H.R. 9495 would give unprecedented authority to the Executive Branch to strip nonprofits of their tax exempt status, without transparency or due process. It is ALREADY illegal to provide material support to foreign terrorism – but under this bill, the Administration could label ANY nonprofit as a "terrorist supporting organization" – without sharing their evidence, and providing only 90 days for the accused to clear their name. Most at risk: Law-abiding organizations providing humanitarian assistance in conflict zones. ??MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD?? 1) Read the attached joint statement from the Council on Foundations, the Independent Sector, the National Council of Nonprofits, and the United Philanthropy Forum to learn more. 2) Call your representative today and ask them to vote NO on H.R. 9495!

Hello, Gladiator Family. Rachel D'Souza here. I wanted to share some of my thoughts over the past few days – because like many of you, I woke up Wednesday morning in a fog. My throat ached from the fear and grief that was lodged there. And when I opened my curtains to reveal a happily shining sun, it felt like a slap in the face. It reminded me of another beautiful morning, this one almost 14 years ago. I was in a hospital bed, recovering from what my medical team had just informed me was a nearly fatal postpartum heart attack. I remember sitting there, asking myself:?“How the hell did I get here?” I couldn’t understand it. I had followed all of the rules during my pregnancy: I attended every appointment, I took all the right vitamins, followed all the diet and exercise guidelines.?I had done everything “right.” As my brain struggled to figure out how I could possibly move forward from that moment, I shuffled over to the hospital window and opened the blinds. Dazzling sunlight poured into the room. Rush hour traffic filled the street with cars carrying people to their daily destinations. I blinked in confusion, unable to square the reality I was experiencing – the life I had known in ruins at my feet – with this other reality outside my window, one in which the sun continued to rise and set and folks carried on with their lives as if nothing had changed. I don’t know how long I stood there. What I do know is that at some point,?I realized that my heart, against all odds, was indeed still beating in my chest.?And in that moment I knew that as long as that was true, I would keep going – wherever my janky heart would take me. Yes, it was true that the life I had known before was over. I knew that whatever the future held, it would be hard; there would be pain, and fear that I couldn’t quite fathom. And it was also true that this new life needed me to press on. After all, there was a beautiful baby boy, just a few days old waiting for me at home. He needed me, and I knew I would never stop fighting for him. My friends, I am not here to tell you that everything is going to be ok. I’m not here to sell you false hope or bullshit platitudes or even try to make sense of how we wound up where we are. I know, as you do, that things are fundamentally different from this point forward; that prior chapter has closed – and while we don’t know what the next chapter holds, we do know it will be hard. We know there will be pain, and fear we can’t quite fathom. And I also know this: The sun was shining Wednesday morning. We are still reaching out to one another to share comfort and connection, to offer solidarity and sanctuary. Our hearts, against all odds, are still beating in our chests. And I know that as long as that is true,?we will keep going. With love in my janky – but enduring – heart,? Rachel

"So, what do these election results mean for me/my organization/our cause?" Over the last few days, I've received concerned calls, texts, emails and requests to meet from my U.S. nonprofit/fundraising community asking some version of this question. While I wish I knew the future, the answer continues to be "It depends." Here's what I do know: In July 2024, the National Bureau of Economic Research published a study done by Indiana University and University of Notre Dame. Researcher studied the impact of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act on charitable giving. We now know that: ?? Approximately 23 million households switched from itemizing their charitable deductions to taking the standard deduction ?? In doing so, giving in those households dropped by an average of $880 ?? After accounting/adjusting for other factors, this represents a permanent drop in giving of roughly $16 billion annually. ?? Most of the decrease was in giving to other types of organizations, especially in giving to organizations whose primary focus is helping people in need of basic necessities. I believe we will see more tax policy similar to and building on the 2017 TCJA in the next four years. Reflecting on this information, along with recent learnings from the #GenerosityCommission and the #FundraisingEffectivenessProject, the scarity can feel overwhelming. Please resist allowing scarcity to take the wheel. Rather, how can we reimagine our causes through a variety of scenarios? First, go listen to those most impacted by your work and HEAR what they are telling you is needed. Then - how do we begin to ORGANIZE our donors and resources? This goes beyond raising money. And - When do we initiate more intentional coalitions and resource-sharing among aligned organizations? What opportunities exist for collaborative fundraising or even merger/acquisition? Whatever may come, I am clear that the only way we will make it through is with each other.
